The bulbs will replace just like normal C5 headlight Bulbs. Yeah it's a PITA. The bulb type will depend if you have a HID system, or regular halogen bulbs.
In my opinion, don't waste your money looking or buying an actual ACA set. I would just a purchase a set off Ebay. Just search for C5Projector headlights, you'll find several for around $225 without the HID system and around $300 with the HID system. VS paying $600 for ACA's which is the same thing as the ones on Ebay. Several here have done the Swap with the ones off EBAY and report them being the Same directly comparing them side by side to the ACA's..

Not sure which version you have, The older ones had a different bulb than the newer one, Mine are newer and they take an H9 hid bulb. Not sure if this will help. As far as changing the bulb, What I do is remove the painted top and the black shroud to access the bulb.
If you have the H9 type bulb I would get ahold of JWMotoring, I am sure he could help you out.

The original ACAs used Phillips D1S HID bulbs that were 4200K.
I see New OEM Philips D1S HID bulb 4200K BMW Germany (Osram) on ebay for $70 as well as other makes from as little as $28.00
You might PM member jdmvette as I recall that he replaced his original 4200 bulbs with 6000K. He may still have his 4200K bulbs for sale.......a long shot.

You definitely need to know what type of bulbs you have. The HID H9 4300k, 5000k, and 6000k bulbs you can pick up on eBay for about $10.

My Bulbs are H11 in my ACA's I got a few months ago. Tons of replacements on that auction site though.
