It's hard to say to be honest. Some people have no trouble driving at that age, while some can barely get out of their own driveway safely. It depends on the person I guess.

There was an incident here in CT yesterday where an 80+ yr old woman drove her Acura through the brick wall of a CVS Pharmacy. She is OK and said she "thought she put it in reverse".
I wonder if she always gives it that much gas to get out of a parking space?

Thats a real sensitive subject down here....in Ft. Lauderdale. Some seniors have an accident on a monthly basis. Politicians are afraid to set age and driving standards because they won't get elected and may get recalled (that happens often).

For officers doing traffic at a church or some kinda special event, seniors are your worst nightmare.lol In just a few months a tree and two officers nearly got run over, one of them had to plow through at least 15 cones at about 30 mph to get to him too. To hit the tree, the lady had to jump a curb and drive about 20 feet further. Same as you said though, nobody wants to be "mean" and take their license away, but its not to hurt them. If you dont, they will inevitably destroy more property and possibly kill someone, not to mention when they finally hit somthing that wont move, hurting or killing themselves. Gotta know when to call it quits for everyones sake.

One of the most difficult things my family had to do was to try to convince my parents they were getting too old to drive. When you get to be in your 80's, driving is one of the last forms of independence that many seniors have. They can't physically do many of the things they did when they were younger, and not being able to drive just adds insult to injury. Think about it. I get angry when I'm behind a very old person driving 20 mph under the speed limit, but then I remind myself that I'll be there sooner or later.

Never too old! There is a guy in Florida where we stay that has a 1962 Vette. He bought it new! He also has a Mustang and a Saturn Sky.
I only hope I can still walk when I am his age.

PAUL NEWMAN was 81 and still racing
Newman's greatest accomplishment as a driver was a second-place finish in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in '79, driving a Porsche 935. He remained active in endurance racing, making his last start at the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway in 2006 at the age of 81. That same year he raced and won some regional races driving his Corvette.
Paul died from cancer at the age of 83.
