Ran over a tack on an expensive set of tires....any options?
I got Yokohama Advan Sport tires on my rear (19 305 30) on CCW rims and ran over a tack just past where the tread is (toward the side of the tire). I pulled it out thinking it was a piece of gum and next thing I know I'm hearing a hiss. A local tire shop I took the wheel/tire to today told me that this is not repairable and that if I want to salvage the tire, I could use either slime or a little fix a flat. My TPMS sensors are NOT in this aftermarket set of rims. Any suggestions on the best way to fix this? This is a very expensive tire and still has a decent amount of tread left on it and I think it would be a waste to just throw it away.

It's hard to say what the best plan of attack would be. It really depends on how far from the tread area the puncture is, and finding anyone willing to work with you. Only if it was close enough would I attempt to use it, it is supposed to be truly dangerous to repair a sidewall. If someone would put a patch on the inside and use a sealant like Slime, you might take a shot. You never know if you'd have a leak at the most inopportune moment. I'd also have a AAA card, just in case. You could also damage your rim. Unfortunately you might have to buy a replacement. Post on the forum "wanted", maybe someone else only has one rear tire.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think both of you are right. I wont be going with that same set of tires, as this set of rims is mostly for looks and the Yoko's are a really nice tire but also cost an arm and a leg. If it comes down to me needing a new set of tires for these rims (my backs) then I guess I'll be going with the Hankook W12s (Decently priced and I read nothing but good stuff about'em)
Right now, my car is outfitted with aftermarket rims up front and the stockers back on out back.

Personally, I'd replace the tire - too much riding on it to wonder if the repair would hold.

Would it be a bad idea to replace just the affected tire with a hankook and leave the yoko on the other rear rim? (different brands but same size on rear?) rather than get a new yoko as a replacement? reason I ask is last I checked the yokos in that size are about $450 a tire (yikes - I splurged at the time I originally purchased these, funds are a tad tighter these days).
The hankook W12s are about half that, saving me about 200 some od bucks on a single replacement for this rim.
Even if I do put a brand new Yoko (which is the same price as two hankooks in that size), I would now have 1 Yoko with 100% tread life and my other with...50% or so.

Have you looked on Ebay or you could post here on the forum for a new or used tire. Remember if you repair the tire and have a blowout you might hurt yourself or someone else. Would a $400 dollar savings pay for a accident or car repair ?

I just checked on Ebay, there are many of these tires new and used including the Yokohama . Check it out.

I'd replace it. I wouldn't want it to fail at highway speeds. Next time get a road hazzard warranty.

Went ahead and bit the bullet. $585 for a brand new set of 2 - 305 30 19 hankook v12's free shipping. I took a look at the tires while they were off and yea I could put off buying new ones for a while but they were definetaly showing signs of wear.

picked up a brand new set of TPMS sensors...which I never bought for my aftermarket rims in the first place. I left the old ones in the old rims- they're still good, but eventually the old rears are going to be out fitted with some drag radials when the track opens up in a few months.

Yep agree with this, as long as you aren't going for a land speed record with those tires, I have never had a problem with plugs and I've plugged many a tire including low profile tires, damn attorneys keep any garages from doing it in case the stars align just right and your tire blows, it's probably just as likely it would get a screw at high speed and blow anyway lol... tires are tough plug em

I have used a plug patch on a 295/18 at the corner where thread meets side wall and it worked fine, the local salesman for plug patches put several in his daily driver side walls and also never had a problem.

I picked up a huge nail in my DS rear tire on my 04 Z06 in september 11. I had to plug the tire in a parking lot. First time ever doing a plug on a tire. Glad GM made a good plug in air pump for the Z06 from the factory.
Anyway, did the little car show I was at then drove the car home three hours away. About every 40 minutes I'd check the tire pressure and it was spot on. I've driven the car a little bit since then but not far from home. Now since I've know this plug is in the the tire next to the side wall it was making me nervous to go anywhere let alone go thru town but the winter and salt on the road is keeping the Z nice and snug in the garage. So for my on piece of mind I'm going to get new tires. After all these cars are a blast to drive and I dont want to be limited, worrying about a plug or plugs in my tires when I want to jump in the car and go.

Well...the tack went in toward the side, and the Hankooks are already on their way. I also went ahead and also ordered TPMS sensors, which I never got around to installing when I initially ordered/installed my aftermarket CCWs, but I will be installing them once I replace the Yoko's that are on these rims.
