How many have had to replace there gas cap?

I know this is an old thread but since replacing 3 gas caps in 35K miles I got one from NAPA 3 years ago for less money and it is still working fine. The ones supplied to GM were hit and miss. My dealer also said they had a lot of issues with them.

A couple of years ago, I was getting a gas smell around the left rear of the car. Thought "it MUST be a bad gas cap". Replaced the cap, still the fuel smell. Turned out it was the seal on the fuel filter, I'm thinking the ethanol in the gas, had attacked the o-ring seal on the filter.
"Funny thing", there was no trace of fuel puddling under the car.......the fuel line is directly above the exhaust pipe, and the dripping fuel was boiling off on the pipe!!

last June.
Dang it, I knew I should have purchased that extended warranty.
Guess I need to start saving my pennies for the day that my gas cap fails.
Worthless GM trash!

My '99 still has the original cap. I got a "Check Engine" light a couple of times right after filling up with gas. Was an immediate tip-off that it was related. Stopped, tightened the cap a few more clicks and the light went off immediately. I now just turn the cap a full turn after the first click (or however far it takes for the wording on the cap to be right side up....I know, a little OCD) and have not had another re-occurrence of the light. Things age and wear, so what. Adjust your routines accordingly. If it ever actually breaks, I will replace it. Fifteen years good service out of a plastic part is pretty good if you ask me!!

P.S. The extra clicks act just like an impact wrench giving extra tension or tightness with each additional click.

Golly Gee $20 per cap x3 = $60 for fricking gas caps plus $12.95 for the last one at NAPA. $72.95. I do not agree that the C5 is crap but GM sure could do a lot better when they know there is an issue with a supplier's product....... but no they just keep cranking out bad parts when they know there is an issue. GM should have been on top of issues like this and they would not have all the recalls of the past year costing millions of $$$.

Yesterday, I had a gas cap, and gas door closure problem with my 2004, C5 (33,400 miles).
Over this past Labor Day week-end, I drove from Seattle to Portland, OR, and back. Monday, on my way back, I stopped in Kelso, WA, to fill up. Had about an 1/8 of a tank left in the tank.
When I tried to remove the gas cap, all it would do is spin, making a ratcheting (clicking) noise, would not allow me to remove the cap. I finally had to break part of the cap to get to the piece that actually unscrewed, just to fill the tank.
After filling-up with $3.50/a gal, freeway gas, I replaced the part of the gas cap that I had removed, back into the gas fill neck, and tried to shut the gas door.
Now, the latch on door wouldn't engage, and I had to use a small piece of black "duck tape" to keep the door from staying in the flipped open position.
Basically, it seemed like two separate problems. Or, are they somehow related?
Also, does the "Check Engine Light" come on, due to a sensor in the gas cap, or is the sensor, pressure related, and part of the gas tank itself?
After filling up, and basically destroying part of the cap, I thought, for sure, the "Check Engine Light" would come on.
My "Check Engine Light" had been on for a few days. After filling-up last Friday, before leaving on my trip, I replaced the cap, I noticed the "Check Engine Light" had turned off. So I thought for sure the light would have come back on, after the cap problem I had, on my return trip.
Any helpful input would be appreciated.

I had to replace the gas cap on my daughters Toyota Corolla when it threw an emission code. No problem since and it cost $12. As far as GM trash goes, I dont think anyone can honestly say GM quality stand up to Toyota so if a Toyota cap has to be replaced then its hardly accurate to say a failed GM gas cap is trash.

Good grief,,, Yea, just ONE MORE THING on an 8 YEAR OLD CAR that just can't stand up to the test of time or use...
So tell me, what piece on your car could break without you claiming it was one more piece of GM trash?????
To the Op: the gas cap seal can go bad. I've had three or four caps need replacement on different vehicles. Not uncommon. Not expensive. Not life threatening.

Just replaced mine on my 01 this week. PCM 1041 I believe. Luckily this forum is awesome and I got to the root of the problem. $13 later and a new gas cap and this guy has no codes...and a gas cap that apparently works now.
