Default Buying hood used or repair and paint???

My '03 Z06 Electron blue had a slight mishap when a can dropped off the shelf in the garage and actually dented the hood. It put an indented crease about a 1/2" long just behind the left headlight. I found a hood in the parts forum that is said to be in perfect condition and the same color and year for $250. My question is should I have it shipped or have mine repaired? If I decide to buy, can they find a box to ship it safely and what is the best and cheapest way to ship a hood from Los Angeles to Minneapolis? Your forum wisdom will be appreciated!

Well if the hood was close, it would be a no brainer. You can barely buy the materials to repaint the hood for $250 but to have it shipped SAFELY will cost. Having it boxed up and being oversized will be a lot of $$$.

I see some old really old posts that say Greyhound will ship for under $100, but don't know what today's shipping would cost.

You might be able to get a painter to shoot the hood for a couple hundred bucks, but that's if you take it off and do the repair and prep work. If you don't know how to do that kind of thing I would consider the hood you have found, but as previously stated, the shipping costs on something like that wil be astronimical. Chances of it showing up unscratched or undamaged are slim too probably.

Damn that sucks. Any damage that has occurred to my car has been in the garage. In one the cabinet fell off the wall and hit the side mirror and knocked the glass out and broke some of the mounting pins inside the mirror and put two 2" scratches on the door. Then when positioning the car on the black tiles (I have black & white checkered tiles) I had the door open and hit a cabinet. Got booth fixed at the same time so now back to good as new. As to what you should do if you can get the used hood shipped safely that would be the way to go but as other have said that is iffy.

I would fix what I had unless it was local. What if it gets there and has damage? Now you have two damaged hoods and out the money.

BTW, I just picked up a perfect black one off craigslist for my project. $150.00 and even has the hood insulator. Guy was putting some sort of custom one on.

I would try & find a shop that sells & ships hoods & other fiberglass
products in the area, close to where you found the $250. hood.(Calif)
Have the person that you are buying the hood from, take it to that
specific shop & use one of theire "hood packing boxes/crate.
Make sure they bubble wrap the entire hood & the "wings" (pointed area near the cowl area, is wraped in cardboard & taped to protect.)
Have that particular shop ship it to a shop, garage, GM dealer, etc in your immediate area. (business to business)

Why not google or pm Corvette Creationz , owner (Pete), & see how close his shop is to where the hood is in Calif.
Pete is a vendor here on the forum & he might be able to give you some advise on getting the hood from Cal to you, safley.
Good luck.

PS, put around $900. insurance on the hood, before shipping.

Take a look at this and see if you could tackle the repair yourself and then shop ard for a good paint price.
