Live in MA and buy car out of state?

I faced the same scenario last year when I was looking for my 2000. There was no paletable way for me to do it. Options were to use a tag from another car I had, use sellers tag, take 2 trips, trust someone big time, or have car shipped/trailer it back.
The first two are not legal in MA, and I questioned whether or not insurance would cover me in an "incident", the two trips and shipping options essentially added >1k to the cost of the car, and I was not gonna trust a stranger on a used car purchase.
Ended up finding one locally which was the perfect car for me. I was really close to buying one in San Diego and taking a week to drive across country...always wanted to do that trip in a vette.
