Live in MA and buy car out of state?
I live in MA. I want to buy a car in another state far away. I'd like to fly down, see car, pay for car and drive home.
The issue is from what I've been told in MA you cant get temp tags. So you have to get the title and reg the car first. Obviously tat is an issue because I'd have to pay for the car, before the seller will give me the title, then wait days to reg the vehicle then fly out.
What should I do? Who from MA or another state has done this?
Thanks

I suggest that you simply call your local motor vehicle office and ask them.
I flew 1000 miles to buy my C4. Paid for it there, the title was signed over to me ........... drove it 1000 miles home ........ (best drive of my life) took it to my local motor vehicle .... registered it and got my local plates & then mailed the Ca plates back to the previous owner.

I alreay know what the RMV will say.
Guess I'm wondering what real people do in this situation.
So in your case the seller let you use his plates to drive the car to your home. Then you mailed plates back to him. That would be a great plan if I can get a seller to agree. Thanks

When I bought my C5 last year in Philly I was able to obtain relocation tags from the state of PA to get it back to Virginia. It was hassle free to do as their laws make you go to the Autotag place to sign over a title according to the dealer I dealt with. Check with the state you are buying it from and see if this is an option.

I took a leap of faith and paid for the car sight unseen (after multiple phone conversations, pictures, and video of the car). The seller sent me the title once funds cleared so I could register the car here in Michigan. Then I flew to NYC, picked up the car, and drove it home. I had a great time driving it back. I took my time and even stopped by Watkins Glen on the way. (See my avatar.)

I did this last year, I flew to Virginia and drove the car back. The seller let me keep his plates on the car for the ride back and I mailed them to him after. I also brought my plates from my current vehicle just incase. As long as you have a Bill of sale and title marked for within the same day I would say your all set. This is the way I have always done this and I have livedin MA my whole life

Is PA the state you're buying the car from? I thought you said it was far away from MA?
In CA the plate stays with the car. Don't know about PA but maybe you should ask the seller. If so, just drive the car home (unless reg is expired). If not, maybe seller can look into getting a temp plate? Or maybe look online. Most states have a website now.

Just bought my '01 in SC back in December. I live in NC. I let my insurance company know what I was buying so I got temporary insurance (3 months) so I could drive it back to NC. Once I bought it, I drove it home with the paper dealer tag still on it and the bill of sale and proof of insurance with me in the car.
I actually went thru a license check a couple of days later and the bill of sale and insurance was all I needed to be on my way. I registered the car and got an actual plate weeks later.

I'd call the bmv of the state where the car is located to find out what you have to do. Some states require you to pay sales tax in that state, so you have to have proof that you have paid sales tax on it. If your state has a higher sales tax rate then you will owe the differance. I was going to buy a motor home in alabama a few years ago, and a drive away plate was less than $30.00, but that was a few years ago.

Yes. I've bought numerous cars and motorcycles from individuals in PA. We just go the their local auto tag store, sign the title and pickup non-resident tags. When you get back to your state you bring all the paperwork into DMV and they create new paperwork for you. You usually have 30 to 60 days to get the new paperwork complete.
Careful with those PA folk. They are all horse traders.

i bought a c4 in Ill, the dealer put a Ill temp tag on it for $10.00 and i drove it home to Ga where my DMV did all of the title and registration transfer. I bought my C5 site unseen from a dealer in Ohio and he put a Ohio temp on it and had it delivered to me by a driver and again the Ga DMV did all of the title and reg change papers.

Here's what I did when I flew from Missouri to NJ to buy my current car. Missouri would not give me temp tags either so I contacted the seller and had him check with the NJ DMV about temp tags. As long as I paid the required temp tag fee, they would issue me the tag and I could use it to drive back to Missouri. All I had to show was a DL and my insurance coverage on my other cars.
You might want to contact the seller and see if he/she can do the same for you.
