C5 Doors: MAJOR design flaw inside
Ok...I'm not sure if you guys have encountered this (you probably have my same issue but just never noticed it).
Upon installing a set of aftermarket speakers in the sh***y Bose unit area, I noticed the inside (and especially the top) of the door panel is open and prone to water dripping from rain and car washes.
If you remove your door panels, and remove the speaker, you will notice the top part above the speaker is completely open to the weather. The weatherstripping that leans against the window glass DOES NOTHING to shield against water dropping on the speakers inside.
SO.....for those of us who DD our babies and DO drive in rain (or even wash their cars ) know this, you are slowly dripping water on your inside door speakers.
I am in the process of installing a plexi-glass semi-circular piece in each door right above my speakers, to prevent any water from dripping on them directly. PICS WILL FOLLOW SOON!

If this is true, where does the excess water drain out? Surely, the door is designed to deal with the runoff, and not fill up with liquid....

There is a drainage hole to let the water run off inside....BUT....before the water reaches the bottom, it drips over the speakers, getting the entire back (and electrical components) of the speaker wettt
This isnt on just my corvette, but on all C5s due to the open design of the inside door panel...no cover above the speakers...in other words, the rear of the speakers are completely open to rain and water downpour. I only happend to notice this now since i was changing out the complete audio system

They arent much bigger than the stockers (or are they?) but regardless, that area should have been covered for water protection

54,000 miles daily driven and I do drive in the rain and in 9 years the door is fine and the stock speakers work great. No issues here at all.

So this issue may have to do with speakers that go DEEPER into the door (like my aftermarkets) rather than the more compact stock bose system....hmm
let me take some pics and keep you guys posted further

I don't know as I would call this a defect, its more of a purpose built design, almost every car out there treats its doors the same way.
They all have drain holes in the bottom, and they normally have plastic seperating the inner door panel from the outer door to stop the inner door panel from getting wet, motors are wrapped etc.
It would be vitually impossible to stop any moisture from running down the inside of the window seal, if it was made perfectly tight, the window would be sealed, and you wouldn't be able to open it.
Just sayin'

Same here.
However aftermarket speakers may not be weatherproofed? I would guess that ALL car doors can leak water. It is probably more prevalent during washing the car than during a rain.

Melting Slicks
Relax, aftermarket automotive speakers are designed to handle it. Some of them are even described as marine rated.
My Polk Audios have been "getting wet" for six years and still sound great.

What gets me is that when we open our rear hatch it channels the water directly into the rear speakers....lol!!! DD and stock speakers still sound good 02 106k...wonder if they are marine rated?
