How To upgrade your 97-00 TPMS and Fobs
want to convert you 97-00 TPMS and fobs to the less expensive and more readily available 01-04 version? i recently did this conversion on my 2000 coupe and thought a write up might be helpful for others who want to do this.
i bought the kit from gene culley at GMPartsHouse.
here is the for sale thread
the install was easy, plug and play on the receiver unit, although you have to take off an interior body panel in the drivers side rear of the cargo area. you'll need some 3M double sided trim tape - here is a thread that discusses that process -
My "Help Me!" thread
then you have to program the key fobs and install the new TPMS's and program them. here is how you do that -
To match new key fobs to your vehicle:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver Information
Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times
until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold
the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed,
push the RESET button once. The message HOLD
LK + UNLK 1ST FOB in the DIC will be displayed.
5. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the
first transmitter simultaneously for five seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned (matched), the DIC
will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you
to learn the second transmitter.
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the third transmitter.
8. Remove the key from the ignition.
The programming mode will shut off if any of following
has occurred:
You don’t program any transmitters for two minutes.
You take the key out of the ignition.
You have programmed three transmitters.
Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Programming
The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system interfaces with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) through the serial data line. Once the program mode is accessed through the IPC, each sensor's unique identification code can be programmed into the receiver's memory. Each sensor must transmit the unique code in the proper sequence. A magnet must be held close to the sensor in order to force the sensor to transmit the identification code. The IPC will display a message as each sensor is programmed, and when to proceed to the next sensor for programming. The receiver also sends a message to the BCM to sound the horn one time, indicating that the sensor properly transmitted an identification code. If the programming sequence is cancelled before any sensor is programmed, or if the vehicle's battery is disconnected, the receiver will remember all current identification codes. As soon as the receiver learns the first sensor identification code, all previously stored codes are erased from the receiver's memory.
J 41760 Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Programming Tool.
Tool required (any medium strength magnet, U or Disk type
1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.
3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
Notice: Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Cautions and Notices.
5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the TIRE TRAINING message appears.
6. Press the RESET button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin
the programming sequence.
7. Install the J 41760 Tire Pressure Programming Tool over the left front valve stem. (i used a mighty magfor this http://compare.ebay.com/like/1208530...Types&var=sbar - you can use any strong magnet, some folks use a speaker magnet.)
8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed
by the IPC messages:
- LEARN R FRONT TIRE
- LEARN R REAR TIRE
- LEARN L REAR TIRE
Programming Cancellation
1. The programming mode will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are met: - The program mode is exited through the DIC.
- The ignition is turned to OFF.
- All four sensors have been programmed.
- The TPM system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no sensors
have been learned.
2. If the program mode is cancelled with less than four codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point
that's it! hope this info helps and good luck!

Thanks for the write up - this surely will help someone that is considering this swap.

Thanks for the writeup. So did you swap the receiver first then the TPMS? I'm thinking if I had to do this I'd have to go to the tire shop to replace the TPMS sensors.

another thing i should mention that i did - after installing the receiver and before installing the TPMS's in the wheels i "tested" them by going through the steps listed above for programming. i just sat in the car with my magnet and made sure they all worked. i didn't want to get them in the wheels only to find out that one or more was inop.

Is it possible to altogether disable the TPMS, like the 01-04 cars, on a 97-00...once one converts to the later receiver?
Thanks for the write-up. I'm in the process of converting (99 FRC), but would like to ditch the TPMS and thus rid the DIC of warnings and such.
Again, thank you...

Thanks for taking the time to write up this.
What really sucks is how GM isn't making a retro kit for these cars. You would think that GM (Delphi) or someone would make a direct replacement. We can get them for any other year except for these few years.

Wow this is an impressive write-up. Thank you for your business and if allowed I'd like to reference this write-up and thread in my sales lists.

When you are in the programming mode (TIRE TRAINING) all you are doing is asking the TPMs to be recognized by the onboard (IPC actually) receiver as well as what position it's located, i.e. L/F, R/F, etc.

I bought a used '03 receiver from a Corvette junkyard and replaced my '98 receiver. As I have a convertible it took only about 15 minutes. I got the connector at the junkyard with the receiver and it's wire for wire. I plan to change the tire sensors in the future and now get a reminder that the TPMS system requires attention. I just delete it. I also bought (2) key fobs on the auction site for $12.00, both work flawlessly.
