Default what oil to use

The former owner of my 98 vette said he used 10-40 napa synthetic since he owned the car, so today I go to napa and had synthetic 5-30 for $3.50 a qt, bought a case, I know owners manual recommends 5-30, will there be any probs with me returning to 5-30, Thank you guys for all the knowledge I have received from this site!!!

nope, you really should be using any dexos approved oil though. it is what your engine was made for.

The car will do just fine with 5W-30 oil in it instead of the 10W-40. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic in mine with that weight.

Default Oil specs are important to pay attention to, . . .

I'm sure your owners manual will clearly instruct you to use a 5W/30 synthic with a GM Specs GM4718M, that's and important heat engineered additive in the oils package. My 2003 came with Mobil-1 5W/30 and it's never failed in any way for me so why change.

Your going to get a hundred "expert" poinions, but for me, The guys who work at GM powertrains division and they said 5W/30 with a oil that passes GM4718M. Good enough for me. I have enough crap to want to re-engineer, but I'm not going to argue with the experts who built my Corvette.

keep in mind the mobil1 made back then is more or less the same as what's sold as mobil1 high mileage today. the newer SN 30w oil has been neutered for cat converter life.

I would return to the recommended 5w30 as outlined in the owners manual. Mobile 1 is what I use in the Corvette but my other vehicles get Castrol 5w30 blend. There are other good choices, just stay with the correct viscosity and you'll be fine.

Okie

Mobil 1, ONLY. Ive ran it in over half a dozen LS engines and never had a single lubricating issue.
And 10W30, being in Oklahoma.

Guess I will stay with the Napa and return to the 5W30; it does meet the GM specs, heard that if I change brands of oil that it could lead to leaks!!

GM4718M has been superseded by Dexos. Same oil, different rating.

Agreed, 5w30 Mobil1 full synthetic is what I run. Id only go up to thicker if the car was consuming oil.

Why the hell was he running a 10w40 oil? Jeez... If its stockish there's absolutely no need for that.

I'm running 5w30 Mobil 1 full synthetic in my Z06 and 02 Trans Am. You can catch some good deals at the part stores on it. Usually 5qts and a Mobil 1 filter for $30, even though you'll need more oil.

I run a full syn 5w40 for the C5 since I track it but all my dd's get Mobil1 5w30. 5+ qt containers from Walmart seem to be the best bargain.
