Well, got the bad news today from my insurance company.

A week and a half ago I was coming home from a friends in the z06 and it started to rain. About a half mile from home, I must have hit the gas a bit too hard (on bald tires, lesson learned), and the back end came around quick. It went up a curb at maybe 25 and hit a sign with the pass rear quarter, and kissed a telephone pole with the passenger fender.









I took it to a reputable shop here in Houston, and the estimate came out to about 2x what I was expecting. Thus, they're totaling the car.

With the value of the car, loan payoff, etc, I'll almost break even. So it could be worse. They also offered to let me buy it back cheap, which would be amazing if I had a place to part it/fix it. Aftermarket items include 17" CCW Classics, RPM Level 5 trans, LT headers, cam, and a few smaller things.

Anyone know a good way to prove the value of the add-ons? The didn't consider anything other than a stock z06 in the estimate.

This hasn't been a good day.

Ouch! And the insurance company might let you keep the added stuff if replaced with stock. Other than that, if not repprted when modified, you are pretty much SOL.

Unless you have a special insurance policy for a modified car, i dont think insurance will cover your mods. I have an agreed value policy for mine with the agreed value at what the car would be worth stock plus what i spent on mods. I had to give my provider a list of all the modifications and photos of everything. Sorry for your luck and good luck to you getting everything sorted.

Well, the agent asked me to submit some paperwork on the mods, which I'll do. I know I won't recover it all, but hopefully I'll regain some of the value of the mods over stock parts.

It could have been much worse. I hate to see this one go, but nobody was hurt.

Sad news indeed. Hate to see all that damage and that the car is going to be totalled. Good luck in negotiating with the insurance company on the mods - hope they treat you right.

For those that expressed interest, the buyback is right about $5800 on it. It's almost worth renting a garage for it (can't keep it at my apartment in that condition). Almost.

I wrecked a '99 Passat 1.8T years ago that was spotless. I had to fight the insurance company to get more value out of it but I did. They claimed the paint was just so so, no leather, etc. I showed them pics showing just the opposite. I also sent receipts for things like my suspension mods, tires, etc. Got it up by several thousand dollars. Always read their report in detail, its a business and they are looking out for #1 and it ain't you!

I didn't think it was, but I see an entry in the estimate for it ($388). Although...I see a few things in the estimate that I might question.

Good advice. I'm going to speak with the insurance rep again tomorrow after I go to the shop. It's just bad timing with the holidays and all.

Sorry about the car man. Hope it all somehow works out for you. Better tires and keep the tc on in the rain on the next car. We all learn the hard way sometimes.

I know a guy who had all his modification paperwork/receipts when his C5 was totaled, and his agent treated him pretty damn well with his payout.

I know there's times you can get caught out in the rain, but I personally do not enjoy driving mine in that type weather.

If the rest of the car is in decent shape, I'd definitely consider this, especially if I had been thinking about going with flared fenders or other bodywork.

Sorry to hear that...But glad you are ok.

You have some valuable parts on it. That trans used is worth about 30% of the 5800. With the CCw's you are looking at over 50% almost in 2 aftermarket parts alone.

Even if you don't wanna fix it you could always swap some aftermarket parts for stock plus cash. I'd love the trans. Might be a PITA but buying it for $5,800 i'd honestly think you could get over that in selling the parts.

If the insurance company would let you swap out parts for stock parts before you turn it in you would def make money.

Just got back from the body shop to collect my stuff from the car.

To those suggesting I buy it back and fix/part it: I'd love to but I don't have a garage where I can work on it. I simply don't have a place to do it. I know the parts, even used, are worth more than the salvage value of the car.

Also, checked on the frame damage, and the front frame is dented a little bit just in front of the passenger door. It looks pretty minor, and the owner of the shop agrees. The front lower radiator support (I think that's what it's called) is shot and will need to be replaced. Since the car was lowered that hit pretty damn hard when I left the road.
