Painting my LS6 intake + FRC's + Power Duct +....
Had finally picked up an LS6 intake recently for $200. So I set out to paint it before I installed it. I had found one online done in Matte Red. It looked like it was cast in red plastic and looked sweet. So that's what my plan was. Until I went to my local paint store and found out they can't put matte clear in a can??? New California regulation or some BS. I've seen matte clear in a can but I wanted to use the 2 stage kind of clear with the activator built in. Oh well, next idea.
Went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of Rustoleum. I started thinking about doing a Chevy Orange in Matte. What I found was Fire Orange. It looked like a burnt Chevy orange so I said wtf. All the paint I picked up was Rustoleum. At the start that is ; )
Sanded the intake down to 600. Used Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter on the intake first. Then used filler primer. Sanded that down to 600 and primed with a redish brown primer. Sanded it down to 600 and primed it again. I wet sanded it down to 1000. The nooks and crannys are not perfect but they can't be seen when the FRCs are in place so who cares.
At this point I chicken'd out on the burnt Chevy orange. I was worried it might look like a mismatch to the Torch Red in certain lighting when our cars look orange. So I took that paint back and couldn't find anything I liked.
Went back to the paint shop and talked to the counter guy again. They were not sure if any of their basecoats will work with the Rustoleum primer I have on the intake. I wasn't willing to strip the intake. I thought about using their primer over mine but he advised against it. It was a gamble but I said WTF. Bought a can of Torch Red basecoat and two cans of black basecoat. Then two cans of the 2 stage clear.
The intake is gloss red and black. The FRC's will be the same but also have a matte black design over the top of them (still top secret)
I will update as I go. Paint is not cheap!

That looks badazz. Great job and a very unique looking intake.

Thanks gentleman. I'm pretty happy with the intake. Fuel rail covers are cleared as well but need to be wet sanded and polished. Had some dust settle on them but should simply polish out. Trying to have some C5 logos made up in an inverted decal so I can apply it over the FRC's and shoot it with the Matte Black I have. It will sit over the gloss black portion of the covers so should be kind of subdued. I'm also gonna try a technique I read about online where you thin out the paint with acetone I believe and use a syringe to fill in the "CORVETTE" letters. You fill them just a hair under being flush and as the acetone evaporates, the paint is leveled out and professional looking. Either that or I will order some domed lettering for them.
Next will be the Vararam power duct. It will be gloss and matte black two-tone with a Torch Red Jake skull (maybe) I like Jake but he is kinda over played. But it would be the only one on my car so..... It's either that or Z51 in torch red.

Thanks for the comments. I can't wait to see it installed as well.
Dont judge the FRC's yet as they are still far from being finished.
There will be red showing on the FRC's but not nearly as much as there is now. I'll have Matte Black going over the top of them that will cover quite a bit. Hoping the finish quality ends up as good as the intake.
