This morning while driving to work I felt like a spring popped out of the clutch pedal. Started feeling with my left foot under the pedals for any foreign object without luck. The clutch still worked okay, so I figured it was nothing serious.

So once I got to the house I gave it a quick look and I found a spring similar to this laying on the floor:



Didn't have time to take a good look so left the car parked in the garage and I'm now on 24h duty wondering how hard this is going to be to put back on tomorrow.

2002 Z06 with ~26k on the clock.

Your spring is broken. I had the same thing happen on mine. The car drove fine without the spring. They cost about $ 10.00 new and take about 1/2 hour or less to install, as it is in a bit of a difficult place to reach, under the dash near the top of the clutch pedal.
Mine was a 2002 Z06 with about the same miles on it.

Here is a close up of the return spring GM part #12555205.
If you decide to re-install a spring, make sure that the two white bushings (shown in pic) are in place & not broken or cracked.

I have an '07 Z06 and it must have a similar (but may not be identical) spring. I found (half?) of this broken spring on the floor under the clutch pedal tonight. The first thing I did was search the corvette forum to learn what it was. Thanks, guys! Since I lost my left hand and wrist a few years ago, I no longer perform mechanical repairs on my cars, so, would anyone have an idea what a dealer would charge for this repair?

Ask a dealer. Then remember that for a C5 the spring costs about 10.00 and takes less than 1/2 hour to install, the first time one does it.
Go to your regional forum and see if any of the Corvette owners would do it for you.

Ordered the spring on line for 12 bucks and took 10 minutes to replace
9 min to get in position and one minute to replace
Dealer quoted $300 .

mine broke several years ago while i was driving. at least 25k miles ago and i've never replaced it. no issues. the car now has 70k on it with original clutch. i'd let it go.

I removed mine, less pedal pressure needed for quicker shifts.

I would steer clear of that dealership and tell them I was going to make sure everyone else I know did too.

Yea, Mine was broken on a car I'm building put a monster stage 3 in it. This thing def. doesn't need it (the spring), should be fine without it!.....

Can't recall where I read it (maybe on this board), but there was a specific reason for the clutch pedal spring ... a purpose that wasn't evident to most people. Maybe someone else recalls the details. That's why I decided to put a new one in when mine snapped.

I wonder if this only applies to GM slaves? I've got a Tick MC, and no spring. Works fine with my RPS twin, but it's the most abrupt clutch engagement I've ever driven.

Last I checked, Tick specifically instructs to remove the spring with their unit.

With the stock unit, I don't see any reason to remove the spring, or to not replace it if it breaks.

Thank You! After some skin fingers & right arm,sore ribs on right side, new clutch spring is in my Z06.
