Default Valuing my car - crazy disparities on Edmunds vs KBB

I am gonna sell my car soon. It's a 2004 Base Coupe, auto trans, 24k miles, in pristine condition, always garaged, etc, etc.

I want to price it fairly, so it will sell quickly. But when looking online, I am getting some insane variations between the different web sites.
  • Edmunds values it at ~$16k
  • KBB values it at ~$27k

Honestly, I feel like the true value is somewhere around the $16k mark, maybe a bit higher than this because of condition and mileage. But why is KBB so far off? I can't imagine anyone EVER paying $27k for this car.

Thanks, Dave F. in Rhode Island

Try NADA they seem to be in the middle. Look on Autotrader and Cargurus for comps.
Good Luck

these are all just guides. No one at the publication will give you that amount of money so why fret over these prices.. the true value of your car is what someone will pay you for it.. if you think KBB at 27K means anything, contact KBB and ask them to give you 27K for it if that's what they think its worth.

A fair price is one that will make you and the buyer happy. If 16 K makes you happy then put it up for sale at that price. If you want to sell it quickly sell it for 15K.... At 16 K someone will buy it. at 20 K some one might buy it but it may take six months.

Good luck with your quest to sell your car.

NADA is probably the closest, but only you know what you are comfortable with. The general thought is that KBB is unrealisticly high, and Edmunds is too low. But as ET so eloquently stated, how fast to you want to sell and what will make both buyer and seller happy is what true market value is.

Good Luck with your sale.

The KBB value of my C5 was about $10K above what I bought it for (which was a decent price, but not a steal by any means). They're certainly WAY off on c5 values.

I think 18K +/- is a fair value for your car.

The best way to judge the price of a car is to always just look at sale history of similar cars...

Go to Carmax and have them appraise your car. Then set your asking price to $2000 more than that.

Agree with all the other responses. If it is truly stock then the price will be lower than the KBB but higher than Edmunds, but just consider there maybe someone looking for just that, the last year C5's were made. So, don't sell yourself short, get up on the used car Corvette websites, do some research and then set your price. You didn't mention any colors, new tires no blemishes etc. so consider all factors. Just going off some of the cars I've seen on Corvette lots, websites and taking into consideration that your car is spot free inside and out, if it were me I'd probably start at 20,050 and see what happens. Oh, and also another factor in getting what you really want for the car depends on how much time you have to sell. If you're not in a hurry, who knows what $$ it might bring.

Thanks to everyone! Lots of great comments. I basically agree with all of you. I want to price the car REASONABLY, so that it will sell rather quickly.

Again, many thanks, Dave F.

I agree, go with NADA and price it accordingly. I think it is a much more realistic pricing guide.

20 isn't out of line at all for a 24k mile 04

i watched a 62k mile 04 coupe sell for 16.4 at a dealer auction back when i was car shopping, that car also need a bit of clean up

put the car on ebay with a 20k min bid and see what happens. just set the terms to cash or wire transfer only

out of state checks from god knows where are a do at your own risk type thing

i would imagine carmax would offer at least 18 on it

Well, I thought I'd finish this discussion by saying that I listed the car for $18,500 and sold it in less than 24 hours!

Thanks for all advice.....

I'm sure it did, you practically gave it away. Did you look at NADA?? I ran it with my zipcode as I didn't know yours and didn't fill in any options either as I didn't know.

http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2004/...T-6-Spd/Values

Rough Trade-In Average Trade-In Clean Trade-In Clean
Retail Base Price $10,775 $12,600 $14,150 $17,575
Mileage (24,000) $6,950 $6,950 $6,950 $6,950
Total Base Price $17,725 $19,550 $21,100 $24,525
Options: (add options) Price with Options $17,725 $19,550 $21,100 $24,525

(Forgive the format, but you get the idea)

Yeah man, I looked at a bunch of sites before I listed it. I guess it's possible to find people to overpay, but I did not want to wait that long.

I shopped hard when I bought the car five years ago and I paid $20k, with 16k miles on it. So, I got a good deal on it when I bought it back then, and today I gave the new buyer a good deal too when I sold it to him. I'm happy, he's happy, that's all that matters.

And that is how we determine market value, willing seller + willing buyer = market value.

Wow, you did get a good deal. As long as you're happy.

pretty much sold the car at auction prices. i can't say i blame you, i typically buy at good deals and sell at good deals just the same way. normally if any normal car is priced right it will sell in less than two weeks.

when i bought my z06 it was from a seller just like you. he listed it at manheim MMR and i bought it 6 hours after he listed it

I think KBB bases their prices on Barrett-Jackson.

Use those sites as guides as mentioned above, but its really what the market will bear, so search the for sale sites, with an eye on your area, and make a decision based on that...
Keep in mind you can always go lower with a buyer, but not higher so set price accordingly.
