Well it finally happened.
After owning my Vette now for 7 years and been a great car it left me stranded last night.
I got off work and went to my car and would not turn over at all, I called my son and had him bring some cables and my spare key.
When he got there I tried the spare key and it fired right up, Tried the first key and nothing.
So when I got home I checked the pill on the first key and it was readin 6200 ohms, Way off from what it should be, I had no idea a pill would go bad, But this one did, Just a reminder to get an extra key for your car, I ordered a new key last night, I think I am going to hide a spare in the car just in case it happens again.
Before you ask, I did try to clean it first and no go.

I had this issue before. My car would not start up. I rubbed my fingers on the pill and it must have cleaned it when I did that, because it fired right up. I have never had an issue again.

Surprised it just dropped out of range all at once, must have been hanging on by a thread. I would have guessed it might have started acting up first.
Got me worried (what do best), so I just checked mine against the Ohm chart.
The key I have been using every day for over 13 years now (guessing about 40,000 insertions) read .01 kOhms below the target value.
I then dug up my second key that came with the car that I have never used, it measured .01k Ohms above the target value.
Next target down from mine is .4 kOhms, next one up is .5 kOhms, so both my keys are pretty much dead on.
Did you maybe use your key to short out a flux capacitor lately?

Great info, thanks for the post! i know i only have one key and will def be getting another key as soon as i get back from deployment. I really just thought that was another small "tooth" on the side of the key not a "pill" with any kind of specified resisitance.

I had a key fob go bad a few weeks back. Took it to the GM dealer parts guy who opened it to test it and found the connections to the battery had broken. Said he'd never seen anything like it before. Glad I had a back-up. I thought everyone would realize what I meant when I said the guy "opened it up."

Replacement key
Here's the link:

Before you order a replacement, you have to first measure the resistance on your original key, then choose the correct key from the chart at the bottom of the listing.
I hope this helps!
