wider wheels would be the safest bet. I've heard horror stories about spacers that fail. mostly on trucks and jeeps, but I would think it holds true for any vehicle.
I know in some states they are not leagal to use on the street and a vehicle will not pass inspection with them on.

besides, the whole reason to flair fenders is so you can have wider tires to get more traction right?

just sayin.....

I have a set of hub wheel adapters for sale, that i was going to use on mine when i got my fenders. They are the safest way to go.

I used 2" wheel adapters for my Ruff racing wheels until I bought the forgestars with custom offsets.

Hub adaptors are your best but.. IF you use a spacer, make sure you get a high quailty one that has the EXACT bolt patter and a Centric hub built in and you will NEED longer and stronger studs. ARP makes studs that are longer and hardened to replace the stockers and press in like stock.

Eibach makes some nice kits.. As does H&R.. sure others out there do as well..
Good Spacer w/ Centeric Hub Ring:

Good wheel daptor (bolt to stock studs and adds new ones):

This is why you do not want spacers. You can see it rolling down the track just ahead of the wheel
