Default The write up

Okay, for a while now I've been wanting to paint my top and I finally got around to doing it. I wanted to try Plasti Dips metalizer which gives a metallic flake finish. The idea was to create a top that looked black from the distance but had red metallic flake in it when you got up close. Well it didn't quite work out the way I planned. The black base coat went on fine, so did the metalizer. It's when I started using the glossifier that the problems started.

What went wrong is two things, one I held the can too far away from the top and didn't get thick enough coats. Second, I don't think I waited long enough before applying the next coat. Plan is to leave it as is for now and peel it off and start over next weekend. I'll give a more detailed step by step write up if it works out the way I plan.

Just leave that crap there and spray more over it. The car will bounce higher if you ever roll it.

At least it is easy to peel and start over.

I actually thought about trying to spray more glossifier on it but the finish under it would be cloudy so it won't make a difference. Got to peel and start over.

FWIW, I don't think it looks as bad as you think! Does the P-dip glossifier actually get glossy??

Glad you are keeping your sense of humor through this. Better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all. It was worth a shot.

What would happen if you just did another coat or 2 of the regular plasti dip and then the matalizer right over what you have?

It looks bad if you see it in person, trust me. Some spots are clear like a clear coat should be and some are cloudy and have a weathered look.

The glossifier will get glossy if applied correctly which I didn't do. I might try just doing the black base coat and metalizer, although a little less this time, and see how it looks. I also thought about putting a clear gloss vinyl wrap over it but I'm not sure about that, prob not going that route.

This video explains every thing. It shows what I did wrong and how to do it correctly so you get a clear coat finish.

I could do that, it would just be more coats that's all.

Yikes. Looks like you got nice coverage, that's about the only good thing I can see. Time to peel and go for round two

I've heard that the gloss looses its clear coat look after a few weeks and turns into a semi-gloss, I haven't had very good luck with the glossifier myself. But keep on trying and your bound to get it down.
