Paint under hood tanks or buy covers?
So been looking at y'alls beautiful engine bays and started looking around. The cost for some of the covers seems ridiculous to me. The covers i'm talking about in particular are the washer tank & over flow tank. The cost of basic fiberglass covers is more than twice the cost of the whole new tank from GM!
So is there a reason to buy covers and paint them as opposed to just buying whole new tanks and painting the tops of those? I mean other than you have to unbolt the old and bolt in the new but seems like it would be the way to go if you want that painted look and want to save some cash for other things.

Why buy another set if you are just going to paint what's there?
2 stage paint dries pretty fast and clearcoat can be handled within 2 hrs or less if put in the sun.

I bought the covers (waffle type), painted them and bolted them on - they do not use Velcro (except for the inner fender covers). I went with the covers simply because I wanted to retain the stock tanks just like they were and should I ever sell the car, the covers can be removed easily and sold.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but this question is related. For those of you using covers, have there been any issues with them staying in place, either the tank covers or the fender well covers? I have heard differing experiences. How many used velcro and how many used bolt on covers? Thanks.

to answer your question about a reason for the covers, you are not sweating a broken tank, just get a new part , back in business.
Beyond that, not my style, but fun to watch.

You have to pull it off to undo the cap.
I roughed up the tank and inside the cover with some 80 grit and used some spray glue before sticking on the 2 velcro strips.
My windshield washer cover is held in place with the 2 nuts on the studs but didn't come with the hole for the cap.
I guess they figure you can take it off to add fluid since the tank holds a gallon and how often do you really need washer fluid in a Vette.
I cut the hole in it for my gold cap.
I used 3M 2 way tape for my fender covers and all is good.

I bought the covers and have had them on for at least 5 years with no issues. I bought painted covers because they look better than if I painted them myself.
