Default Stripped Delrin Shift **** - Possible to fix it?

I stripped the inner threads on my delrin shift ****. I was wondering if it is possible to fix it, before I go buy another one.

Any ideas?

TIA,

John

You could fill about 1/4 - 1/3 with clear silicone and install it. That will keep it from coming off, yet you will be able to spin it off if you need to remove it later.

Thanks for the suggestion for using a helicoil:http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2378&ppt=C1986

Those repair kits are expensive! $49.99 costs more than a NEW shift ****($35)

Thanks! I was thinking about using Gorilla Glue, but then I was afraid that I'd never be able to get it off again. I will try silicone.

You can fill the hole with JB Weld and then have it retapped. If you don't have a tap, coat the threads with vaseline, fill the hole with the JB and press it on. When the JB hardens the vaseline should allow the **** to spin off with its newly made threads. There is a company named Speed Dawg that makes custom *****, maybe they could repair it for you. I have a **** made by them that has a threaded metal insert.

Drill it out and JB-Weld in the correct threaded nut.

Default Problem SOLVED

Two words: Duct tape

I wrapped the threads on the shaft with 2.5 wraps of duct tape and screwed it back on. It fits tighter than ever!

Thank you for all the replies.

For future reference, I have also used Teflon tape on the threads to keep from having to use a jam nut. (so the **** could thread on as far as possible)

Delrin is one of the toughest materials to bond to and there are only a couple of "good" adhesives. And most inserts that are specifically for plastics do not come in 9/16-18 internal thread size.

You might want to try one of these:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-th...nserts/=trntf4

although there is no guarantee that the adhesive will work on Delrin, as it was intended for metals.

I do have some cast polyurethane dark blue or maybe black shift ***** that are similar to the Delrin stick *****. I would just need to drill and tap to the depth required.
