Default 12 disc CD changer

Hey folks, I have a '98 convertible with a 12 disc CD changer and it has started giving trouble. It appears to be in the loading/unloading system. It wouldn't load the CD back into the tray and loaded the next one into the player. I would have retrieve the CDs manually. Now it has quit completely. Would like to get it fixed, does anyone now a reputable place to get it repaired? Or am I better off to replace it? Bear in mind I want to use the stock mounting with no modification. Thanks

I can't help you with your question. Do you have an iPod or iPhone? If you do, you can buy a converter from Double D Mods that plugs into your 12-disk cd changer. You can then play all your music from your music library on your iPod or iPhone. If you have an iPhone, you can play music from Pandora, IHeart Radio or any other music app. All the sound is digital and goes through your Bose system. Even charges your iPod or iPhone. I have it and never have to bother with cd agains.

Could it be the cartridge is getting worn out? I bought a new spare cartridge online for about 20 bucks.

In my opinion I wouldn't worry about fixing a 16 year old unit, I ditched mine years ago for an iPod touch and I now have 8000 songs loaded into it with no skipping and no cd's floating around the car, The iPod was the best and most used mod I have done to my car.
With the digital age here I think cd's are soon going to be going the way cassettes have. A lot of new cars don't even offer a cd any more, Just a usb port for digital music.

It is the digital age, that's why I burn my own CDs from free music I downloaded years ago. CDs will always be around. I prefer to keep my car the way it came from the factory and would fix my changer if it ever fails. I have 2 cartridges filled with 24 cds so there are no CDs floating around. I don't have an ipod or iphone and love my changer. It works great.
How much did it cost to download 8000 songs?

I am just saying for me iPod works great, I never have to worry about changing out the cd mags for the music I want for my trip, And I have very little invested in music and all I load on my iPod are 320 bit rate music for great sound.

One cartridge lasted for 1500 miles to Connecticut and the other got us back home. There isn't 8000 songs I would listen to so for me the 700 or so songs are plenty and there is always the radio. After my last Corvette I would never buy a car that had aftermarket radio or been messed with.

I am not going to sit here and trash this thread, I gave my opinion as you did, Not sure why you feel the need to argue the point. Time to move on, Sorry guys.

I am not arguing at all. I am just giving an opinion just like you. Why does everyone think someone is arguing if they have a different opinion?
The man wanted to know where he could get his changer fixed. He wanted to keep it stock. You are the one that derailed the thread with your opinion.

This is where I was going to have my changer repaired before I decided to use an iPod adapter. He is highly recommended on the C5 forums.

While I am on Mr.Bill's side as to the issue of iPod vs CD changer, the OP was in fact looking for a solution to his CD changer problem. I think JR-01's suggestion of trying another cartridge is a good one and a relatively cheap one at that. Parts, particularly moving ones, wear out, and before going to the (likely much more expensive) route of having the unit itself fixed (or replacing it), it always a good idea to try the simple and inexpensive possible solutions first.

You can keep your car stock with the 12-disk changer and use an iPod or an iPhone. The converter from Double D Mods plugs into the back of the 12-disk cd changer. You can't use both at the same time but you can convert back to 12-disk cd changer in a matter of seconds if you want to. I don't know about you, but I have never found it easy or effective trying to use the radio when driving long distances. Most of the FM or AM radio stations only transmit for small distances. Would have to be constantly trying to find stations you like when traveling. Now if you had an iPhone, you can download the Pandora app (or other music apps) for free and create your own music stations and listen to digital quality music for free and never lose the signal.

Use an FM transmitter for your iPhone. That's what I do.

Varied opinions out there on the sound quality...but let's get real - it's not like the cabin is super duper quiet in a Vette! LOL...

Cheap and easy with no mods. Some units have USB ports that will allow you to charge your phone as well.

Just my 2% of a dollar...

The converter from Double D Mods is $79.00 and is plug & play. No mods required. Sound quality is digital and light years better than a FM transmitter. Can convert back to your 12-disk cd changer in seconds if you want to.
