Default Looking at 2004 Coupe, help

I am looking at a 2004 at the beginning of the week. It is an auto with 75000 miles and one owner. Please help with the issues of this model and what I should be looking for.

Thanks.

Default Take your time

I used this forum as a very import tool in my 5 month search for a 2004 vert manual this year. It really helped me focus on what I should first decide about my must haves then start my search. After traveling in a 200 mile radius to find my dream car I saw a lot of junk. MY SUGGESTION: DO NOT COMPROMISE ON YOUR MUST HAVES! The car I bought fit every muist have. It took time, but it was well worth it.

Read here on the forum, and learn how to 'pull the codes' out of the DIC. Clear the codes on the car, then drive it, and recheck for codes before turning the car off, to see codes which come back.
Maybe print off a list, or find them (a list of C5 codes) on your smart phone if you have one, to refer to if your car shows any current codes.

Be patient, as others have stated. Your C5 is out there, and it may or may not be this one.

Couldn't agree more, after learning what I could from this forum ended up buying my first vette, 2004 coupe, from a forum member. 1450 miles from my location and has been worth every mile as the car had every single item on my list. The only thing i did not realize was how much the performance bug would hit me!

Thanks to everyone for the input and I am looking at the links for all the information.

Hope the car checks out with the input!!!

OP, I don't think there is anything unique to the 04 as far as problems go. Have a mechanic check it out and check for the usual leaks. Include the gas tank in your check for leaks. Bring a CD and be sure to check out that part of the radio, especially if it has a 12 disc player. Have the mechanic include the harmonic balancer for wobble in their check.

These cars are pretty solid with few issues. I have an 04 with 50,000 miles and it's never been back to the dealer or to a repair shop for any reason.

There is only one thing I know of which is specific to 2004 which is a fuel tank leak issue. Here is a link that should tell you whether your VIN is applicable. If it is it may have been fixed if it leaked. Any GM dealer should be able to pull up warranty work on your this car. The dealer would not have done the fix if it did not leak.

I have an 04 with 83k on it. I bought it with 50k and it was a one owner car. It is my wife's daily driver except in snow. I like the car but it has cost me some money. Here's my list from memory.
Front tires and it needs them again. This time no run flats. Rears this time also.
Right headlight motor
Ac/heat control panel
Brakes and rotors all way around no big deal all cars need that
New gas tank as mine was leaking just made the 10 year warranty extension that goodness
Rear diff resealed
Water pump
Trim shop to repair bolster on drivers seat.
Belts and all tensioners to stop annoying belt squeak
It is a good car and we really enjoy. Go for it buy it.

Do a search of gas tank cross over problem. Certain 2004 vin numbers were covered by a special warranty, That warranty expired 10 years from in service date. If your vin number falls with in that group there is a chance car might have that problem. Car fax might show if that repair was already done. My 2004 just showed sign of cross over this past summer. Repair would have been around $ 2000.00 at dealer. In my case my aftermarket warranty I bought for car covered cost.

If it has the gas tank problem, the way to check it out is fill the tank with gas, then drive it. Within a few miles, the smell of gasoline should be substantial if it leaks. Be sure when you fill it to not overfill. Let the pump click off and don't top it off or add any gas once the pump indicates its a full tank. I have an 04 coupe that I bought over 2 years ago and have not heard of the gas tank problem for these cars prior to late this year. The only reason I know about it is I did a search when looking at a C6. Apparently the C6 has the problem.
