When I bought my 01 guy threw me keys and said have at it and me and my brother took off and were gone a good 45 minutes. The guy knew I was serious because I drove 3 hrs to get to him but I would never let a stranger go for a test drive without me in car and I didn't pay 17 either. 17 a little high.

Looks like yours is a coupe though, don't verts fetch a higher price as they do with pretty much any vehicle?
Regardless, I would not have let the guy back out of my driveway, but much more so, would not have let it go... license plate, follow him home, legal recourse of some sort...

I would never buy a used car I couldn't drive myself.
When I sold my Viper ACR, the way I did it was that after I drove the guy around and he was 99.999% sure he wanted it, I took his certified check and put it in my pocket, and he could drive it to his hearts content. Any accident, I pocket the cash, he keeps whatever is left of the car. Very agreeable way to do things, IMO.

Once upon a time in a land filled with mystery and suspense... a man was selling a car. His car was his pride and joy and even though he didn't want to, he needed to sell his car Then one day a guy showed up at the castle of the prince and had a bag full of money to purchase the car...
but, alas the prince didn't want the man to drive his pride and joy....
The End

You are in Califonia where everything costs too much. Same in New York. Market changes with location. I was living in VA when I purchased my car from a seller in Louisiana. Market in Louisiana was softer than VA at the time.

$17,000 for a 2000 w/20K does seem a bit low compared to some recent listings: check these out

I paid 16k for a 2000 coupe with 45k. It came with a stack of receipts. I think it was fairly priced for a 6 speed Z51 two owner car. 17k seems a little low for a 20k vert but deals are out there.

We bought out car from a fellow member here. He pulled the car out of the garage, tossed us the keys, never met us before, maybe we have trustworthy faces. Anyway, we took the car for a few miles ride, pulled-over in a parking lot to check the car over pretty good, popped the hood, came back and told him we would be back in a week to take it. Left him a deposit so he knew we would return. Thanks for the car Max!

That sounds like a happy ending unless the guy had a really big bag of money,

That's OK - I would not give anyone $17k for a 2000 FRC. That's way high. Look at NADA, KBB, etc.

You've got an interesting, if delusional, view of reality. Its completely common and sensible for the buyer to drive the car himself and 17k for a 2000 is not low, its unreasonably high. I bought my 2001 vert for $15 5 years ago.

If/When I decide to sell mine, I will be in the passenger seat for any test drive. Sold my 94 Vette, older gentleman never even drove it. Didn't even hear it run, it was sitting in a car show at the time.
