the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone
It's amazing how everything in this car is somehow connected to everything else, in a way you may not know at first.
My key fob on my 2000 A4 quit a couple of days ago, and I figured the battery was finally dead. I've had the car for over a year and a half and have no idea how long ago the battery was replaced in this fob. I could get into the car with the door key, but once inside with the key in the ignition, the memory seat would not automatically activate but would work if I hit the Mem 1 button. When I turned the car off, the seat moves back to let me get out of the car. I could sync the fob to the car by pressing both buttons and holding for 7 seconds and the fob would work locking and unlocking the car right then, but if I came back an hour later or the next day, again it was dead. I tested the battery in the fob and it read 3V. There are no codes other than a few ancient history ones that have been there since I got the car. I checked all the Options and they were unchanged - the memory feature is activated. The same thing happened to the fob today, it wouldn't work, the memory seat feature would not activate when I put the key in the ignition, so I decided to put a new battery in the fob. That cured the problem - it now unlocks and locks the door, and when I get in the car the memory seat works when I stick the key in the ignition. It seems that the automatic memory feature will only work if you unlock the car with the fob, using the key in the door and the memory seat won't automatically activate. The fob must wake up the whole car aside from just opening the doors. Who knew those were connected? Anyway, all's good now, just thought it let you know this happened just in case anyone else has this problem.

Here's what the owner's manual says about the Memory function:
When first entering your vehicle, after pressing the
unlock button on your remote keyless entry transmitter
or a MEMORY button, a recall of your settings will
occur when the door is closed and the ignition key is in
the ignition switch. As the memory settings are
recalled, the light above the button will flash until the
correct settings are achieved, then glow for five seconds
when complete.

All I know is that the OPS was Part Number 001 and the designed the C5 around it!

Your experience makes sense. The car must be able to read which key fob is giving the commands. You can have different memory settings for each fob. (Just like the memory switches on the door) Your battery must have been low enough to only transmit the unlock / lock feature and nothing more. Glad all is well again in the universe.

I understand how the memory function works and that you can turn it on and off, my only point in posting this was to say that the memory feature will not work automatically when you get in the car and put the key in the ignition unless you have unlocked the door and have also have woken up the car's computer with the fob.
