Default Emergency Brake adjustment question

Took my C5 out of storage after several years and the E Brake goes all the way to the top and wont hold. Is it an easy fix to adjust it, I have done this in other cars and it wasn't very hard at all, but dont know about this one

Thanks Deano

It isn't bad at all just make sure U don't tighten them to tight and then try and pull the drum off. There is a long spring that came off when I adjusted and pulled off to readjust that came off and it was a PITA to get back on. I am told that if u adjust and can get the hub back over the shoes it isn't to tight. Well I thought it was and in the process of removing the hub to loosen it up a little I dislogded the spring. The concept is just like the old brake drums from yrs ago.Good luck

mine only grabs at the very top, the very last click, and even then im not sure if its a full grab.

Was going to try to get this done but after seeing the write up I think I will just live with it.

Thanks but no thanks

Trivial job if being done as part of a rotor replacement, otherwise not so much: getting there is half the "fun".

You will have to decide if it is easy or not.
Post 20 in that thread is what you want to follow for adjusting the shoes. I did mine via that method and it holds strong and locks 1/2 way up on the ebrake handle.

It's a drum brake in the middle of the rotor, there is an adjustment access hole on the rear.
It's a simple star adjuster but does NOT adjust automatically like the old drum brakes would.

There is? Every description of the adjustment procedure that I've seen (including the FSM) requires removal of the rotor for access to the adjuster.
(Not a "gold star moment" for the designers, IMHO.)

U may be correct but mine has no access hole to adjust. The older cars did have an access hole, really no reason to have to adjust because they shouldn't wear unless u drive with the emerg. Brake on. U park, apply brake and release when you drive.

See the plug and the hole in the backing plate?

Oops, I have a 2004. The main reason to adjust it is if whoever replaced the rotors last didn't bother to set it correctly.

That's an aftermarket part that apparently copied an early-year design.

I agree, i have read that most ebrakes were not adjusted properly from the factory.

True story. LOTS of C5s were shipped out that way.

Correct adjustment calls for 11-clicks to hold tight. That places the handle approx mid-travel and about 45° angle.

Yep. If you read up on all the post the original guy who posted that procedure in post 20 of the other thread worked for gm. He tried to get them to change the process but they would not. So almost all e brakes came from the factory not adjusted properly.
