Default Oh Deer...

Well, my fears came true....it could have been much worse. Another few inches forward and the deer could have been completely in front of me. But, it stopped just in time to whack his head on my A-post and mirror. We had just put the top up and rolled up the windows since it was cool and damp in the mountains. If the window had been down it may have knocked me out when it slammed the mirror into the drivers side glass....all the damage is visible in the pics below.

The good news is I get a new windshield since it scratched the windshield molding....and I was gonna have the nose resprayed this winter so I am having that done now along with the headlight covers and hood. Also gonna take the opportunity to install clear corner lights since the nose will be off. This is actually my wife's car so she was distraught over her baby getting hurt, but it will be better than when we got it, once done.

You got lucky. A deer caused 10k worth of damage on the Lexus RCF and I was only going 35 mph when I hit it.

I can imagine....this is $3800. I was going 65 so you see a complete imprint of the mirror in the glass.

a couple years ago we were cruising down a two lane road in southern indiana when a big buck jumped out and just stood in the middle of the road. i locked up the brakes and skidded for what seemed like forever and came within about a foot of hitting it. it never even moved. where's a damn dentist when you need one....

Good news that no one was hurt and the damage was relatively minor. Best of luck getting it repaired.

Close call!

Were there any surveillance cameras out there to where you might identify the offending deer? If so, you may be able to get the deer's insurance to pay for the damage?

I see another member on the forum that would probably buy that damaged mirror from you since he just needs the mounting pegs and you will definitely be getting a shiny new one!

I feel your pain. Mine is still in the body shop after a deer jumped out in front of me a month ago. $5500 worth of this and that to be replaced and resprayed.

I'm always worrying about that around me as well. With all the new houses going up in my area there are more and more deer on the streets in the evenings!

Sorry to hear that. I've been there. I had one do a number on my dually years ago. It hit me at speed running in from the side and caved in a steel door skin.

Question:
Do you guys run deer whistles on your cars?
I run them on EVERYTHING. On the Corvette, I had them inside the front bumper lower openings.
I've been buying these lately as they are small, and you only require one per car. I have 4 sitting on my desk now, and need to go reinstall them on the Vette (after mods) and also the Harley.

WOW! you got lucky! not bad.
I once wacked a deer going 85 (me, not the deer). Truck was severely damaged. All my cars have deer whistles now. The whistles are effective at making them stop and look around instead of running around randomly like rabbits on speed.

I agree all... we were very lucky. I will be looking into the deer whistle. Seems like a cheap way to at least get there attention in advance.

Unfortunately none of the mirror survived...it is completely etched in to the side glass from the impact and only the shell was laying in the road.
