Question Keys and Fob
Hey All....I went back by the Dealer the other day...was Checking to see if they found the second set of keys to my 02 Vette....They said they only had one set for it...I know the Key has a chip in it...saw a blank one on ebay the other day...says for c5 ...Question is doesn't the key & Chip have to match the Ignition ...?? or does it matter...The service dept was closed...and I could not find out how much another key and fob would be for the car....Thanks

The 'chip' is a resister pellet. You can measure the resistance of you existing key to determine which one you need. I don't know where you would pick one up, maybe the service department. Hope this help. Also the service department will test you key for free to determine the right pellet.
All the best,

There are much cheaper options out there than going through the dealer's parts department.

You can buy fobs for the 01-04 on ebay for $10 or less and program them easily sitting in your car. As others said, measure the resistor in the key, make sure you have the scale correct (for example whether it's 400 or 4000) and buy those cheaply on ebay also. Lowe's cut mine for free, but I had to talk the guy into it, he said he was afraid he'd mess up the "security feature".
I had a friend who sold Chevy's at a dealer. I went by one day and asked if he had any used fobs not belonging with cars. He opened a drawer and pulled out a box with about 50 in it. He gave me one. If you have any connections, give it a try. Match up the FCC # on the back, don't worry about the large "1" or "2" on the back, that's just a reference # so you can distinguish between two fobs on the same car, either will work.

New GM replacement fobs for 97-2000 are all the same now, no passive switch. For your own sanity, don't buy a used one. Cultrag (forum vendor, formerly gmpartshouse) can get you a new one for a little under $100 if they are still available. The 01-04 fobs are ok used and very cheap. If you have a mind to, you can upgrade your receiver, fobs and tire pressure sensors to the 01-04 less expensive ones. Gene at Cultrag has those kits, too.

how do you know what FOB number you need? Assuming that the car did not come with a FOB at all. All I got was the key
Nevermind. Found it
