Default Advice from those who know

Hello, all...my name is Robby. I have a 2k Arctic White Coupe. Getting time to get new shocks all around, looking for some thoughts. I have heard that the C6/Z06 works well on the C5, but would I need anything else when they go to be installed ? Please tell me about your choice...Tha
nks.

Nope....direct bolt in...nothing else needed (and they do perform better).

When you get around to it you'll do the sway bars....best for C5 with stock sized tires are the C6 Z 51 bars (not the C6 Z06 ones), and at some point (maybe now) you can do the solid end links (the stock C5 links are plastic).

All of the above are direct bolt on, nothing else needed.

I did all three at once (very frequent sales from forum vendors) and yes I did notice a difference. Not building a race car, just wanted it to handle better....and it did.

_____________
I have an '02 Z51 Coupe with C6 Z06 shocks. I opted to forego the slightly larger C6 Z51 sway bars, and my Z51 came with metal end links, but you may benefit since the standard C5 Coupe sway bars are smaller and you probably have plastic end links. I didn't notice a big difference in the ride, maybe a bit stiffer. I bought mine from CULTRAG Performance, a forum vendor, who happens to have a Black Friday sale going on now. They have the C6 Z06 shocks, sway bars, and metal end links available. Good people.

The C-6 Z06 shocks are an easy swap that won't break the bank. You might also consider the C-6 Z06 sway bars.

I thought I read somewhere that the Z06 bars didn't really fit properly and the Z51's were the way to go?

I did put the C6 Z06 shocks on my '03 coupe and they made quite a difference.

Did the same and love the handling...

They are a perfect fit, you'll need new bushing though.

Hey Robby. I have some aftermarket sway bars (front/rear) laying around that are nearly identical to the GM T-1 race sway bars, if interested.

I bought them first for my C5 then went T1. Realized they were only 1mm difference than T1 and was pissed I spent $700 on the T1 for 1mm more bar front/rear.

Just an option compared to other bars. PM me if interested.

you do realize that there is more to it than 1 mm O. D. right? Solid or hollow, wall thickness if hollow, material, hole location ... 1mm O. D. doesnt necessarily tell the whole story of how a bar will handle.

Anyway, you might also look into the Doug Rippie Motorsports custom valved Bilsteins. They are not just for racing. I have them on my Z06. They ride really nicely. Yes they make the car handle very well, but they are not very stiff at all and the ride is pretty nice. Randy Rippie posts them in the autocross and road racing forum frequently.

The C6 Z06 shocks are an excellent choice as replacements for the stock shocks. You didn't say whether or not you have the F45 option on your car (adjustable shocks - you would have a selection switch on the console next to the traction control/active handling button). If you have that option on your car, then if you put regular shocks on, you will need to get the F45 option tuned out for the car to perform properly. Just thought I would throw that out there just in case that option is on your car.

I recently replaced my shocks.I simply put the factory spec replacement Delco shocks on my base '99..My old shocks were orig and ancient..

The diff with a correct factory shock is huge and a perfect balance of handling and comfort.

Plus I find no need for additional bushings, swaybars, fancy links, etc etc..

I like the factory engineered set-up on my car, it'll take all I can give it for sure.

Robby,
So your point in doing this stuff is to build a weekend racer or just an occasional "spirited drive" to work ?

Don't waste money on performance you won't use. Replace old shocks with Z or C6 (or in my case Bilstiens) and see if there is really the need to do anything else.

Just my .02-

Robbie, I just updated my 2000 Coupe with C6Z06 shocks, C5Z06 swaybars with metal endlinks and C5Z06 springs. I bought the shocks from Gene Culley at Cultrag, really good people. The other pieces I bought from Forum members. I also lowered it about 3/4 inch front and rear with a C5Z06 alignment. I got this formula from scouring the Forum and taking the wisdom from those who had done it before me. The change in ride and handling was dramatic, flat, no lean, slot car like. I have also added C5Z06 wheels front and rear. I did all of this for $1,500 and did the work myself in my own garage. I am getting ready to compete in the regional autocross events while still driving on nice days on the street. Next for me is upgrading the brakes, adding a harness bar, changing the differential, adding long tube headers and a good tune. Good luck with your project.

I did exactly the same thing with two exceptions. First, I kept the base springs for a little more compliance to deal with the sh*tty MI roads I drive on (I don't track the car). Second, I did not do an alignment (I took it to the only technician I trust to work on my Vette and he couldn't get it on his alignment rack due to the front spoiler).
