When my SWPS went out on my 04 it would cut off the cruise control and pull the car hard to one side or the other. Can be pretty scary when driving at speed. We where on an eleven day road trip when this happened so I had to turn off the tc/ah to get home safely. The abs will still function though.

Does anyone know if theres any issues on a non "active handling" model, if the SWPS goes out?

I believe that active handling came standard starting in 01 and was optional in the 98-00 model years. The car drives and functions fine with the "nannies" turned off. Just like driving the old muscle cars from yesterday. Just be careful to remember to control your go fast peddle a little more. The abs will function for stopping but these cars can swap ends pretty quick when too much power is applied in certain conditions.

Can't be happier that my 2000 does NOT have AH.

Some of the parts for early C5s are getting down right expensive.

On cars with active handling (which mine doesn't have), I think the AH is also disabled.
Somewhat of a concern for me, as mine throws intermittent C1281 codes. However, it has been doing it since the car was new. If the sensor was going bad I would think after 18 years it would have failed by now so I have been ignoring it.

The only information I've been able to find is that the power steering goes into 'maximum assist' mode, instead of the normal variable assist.

mine also doesn't have AH thankfully, and im wondering if on non Active handling models do we even have an SWPS?
I don't see why , as it serves no purpose as far as I know?
