Default GMVIS VIN Lookup

Greetings,

I hope this is the right section to post this. I have researched the VIN lookup and the decoder. However I am quite confused on the number of threads on the web about this lookup. I am wondering if the lookup will provide any information on factory recalls that have been done to the car. I have read that this lookup is mostly for options based on the cars VIN number. Am I right in assuming any work done to the car will be on this report?

Here is my VIN..... 1G1YY22G6W511285

Please forgive my ignorance and confusion. If this post is in the wrong section please move to the appropriate one.

I am asking the question here to see if I had the column lock bypass installed.

Thank you

Jeff

Apologies,

98 A4 and yes I want to see if GM did the recall. I have looked in the passenger foot well for the LMC5 module, however I did not see one installed. Also does the GMVIS VIN Lookup give detailed information on any work GM has done to the car. The reason I ask is I did a VIN decoder online with my VIN and info was not matching my car..

I am new to all this, ignorant until I keep reading this forum.

Will update my profile as well.

Thank you

Unless GM has changed their policy, I believe you can go to your local Chevy (or any GM) dealer and ask them to run the service history on the car. It will show warranty/recall work done.

Column does not lock. It is why I am assuming the GM recall has been done. I do understand the LMC5 is not a GM product, but aftermarket. My research is to see if I can install LMC5 withe the recall work don, if in fact it was done by GM

If the recall was done and the previous owner didn't peel off the sticker, there is a small rectangular sticker in the engine compartment that is located on one of the fender wells telling you the recall was done. See link below

Tried to run this in GMVIS2 for you and it says not enough digits. Double check your VIN should be 17 digits you only gave 16.

And yes it will show all warranty info, any open and closed recalls and any work done under warranty at the dealership.

You can also see what dealer did what repair. But that is on another tab.

skip1980 thank you so much. So the GM recall was done according to Job card#210863? That is an assumption on my part.

You can also see what dealer did what repair. But that is on another tab.
Please do tell.

Do I need to pay a fee to get full access to the information you posted. Can I contact GM to get a hard copy?

Thank you
Jeff

No you can't pay for this service. I used to work as a tech at the GM dealers. I now am a tech for a large government fleet so I still have acess because of the fleet purchase program. When you take your car to the dealer this is the same site the service advisor uses to see if your car is under warranty or if there are any open recalls.

Its pretty handy though. I have used it to check out cars before buying them. You can see whats been done and where it was done at.

Its been a while since I replied to this thread. I just got the "pull key, wait 10 sec" (been waiting for this in paranoia) I shut car off and just restarted. I have been researching this. I did not see the LMC5 in passenger footwell or a recall sticker under hood on either fender. in the above GMVIS2, is there anything in the summary that indicates the recall was done? I am assuming it is job card# 210863.

Please advise if I am wrong. Going to look again for the bypass.
