Default Widest muffler that can fit in tunnel

Hey all,

I bought a C5 recently that has no mufflers. The axle backs are straight piped. Instead of going the regular axleback route, I'd like to add a single dual in dual out muffler to the stock H pipe and was thinking about doing the Magnaflow 11386, pretty much just like this
.

I'm not worried about volume since it can't get any louder than it is. My concern is the width of the muffler in the tunnel. I can't be sure this guy didn't have rattles and if the muffler was too close to the walls of the tunnel. What do you guys think? It's a 4x9 muffler and I've heard the tunnel is 9 inches wide. Bad idea?

The alternative is this 5x8 oval that will fit for sure but won't be as loud because the body is 4" longer.

You have very little room to stick a muffler under the center portion of the car unless it is very thin. The car sits close enough to the ground the way it is without a muffler decreasing the available room. JMO.

I would get under the car and do some measurements first. Ive seen some setups with skinny resonators in the tunnel

Think that won't work. The cat area is pretty big, but one past that app. 15" length, it narrows substantially. Visually add up the 2 1/2" pipes and the space between and to the sides...

Magnaflow and Bassani both offer exhaust systems with mufflers in the tunnel, so...

Can't say it makes a difference in that area, but those pictures are for a C6, not a C5.

c6 tunnel plate and drivetrain will fit in a c5 so I bet the tunnel area is the same... I've never seen those exhausts personally but I like the idea, it cuts down on all the bends and gives you lots of room in the rear to work with if you wanted to use fluid coolers or whatever else you could think of

I agree, think the tunnel part is the same. The rear part can't work in a stock C5 though due to the center compartment.

Why would anyone want to place mufflers closer to the engine? Aside from the packaging issue--the further away a given muffler is--the more effective it is because the exhaust is cooler and allows more flow at a given RPM.

Interesting... they don't (especially the Bassani) look like they would wrap around the rear center storage compartment.

Why? Because they laid the tailpipes next to each other for the photo? Plenty of room back there. Just like any other "straight pipe" exhaust system. Just like the Borla XR-1 shown below...

Thanks for the pic! Didn't think even that one looked like it would work.
