How Much Oil Do You Put In Oil Filter?
We're supposed to put 6.5 quarts of Mobile 1 in our C5s, right? Question: Of the little bit that you pour into your oil filter, do you deduct that from your total quarts? Or do you pour a little into your filter and then dump 6.5 more quarts into the oil fill cap?

I fill the filter with oil that I'm using from an already predetermined amount.

I fill the filter (usually need to top it off a couple times as the oil soaks into the media) then add oil until it is about at full on the dipstick. Idle the engine a little, then recheck and top up. I always have a stock, as I use the same Mobil 1 for 3 vehicles and a standby generator - and anything else that needs lube oil, like lawnmowers, etc. Either buy it at Wallies in 5 qt jugs or from Costco by the 6 pack, whichever I am close to. Never actually measured how much it takes.

I have always used the 7 quarts in mine also.

If the owner's manual says 6.5 quarts, why do some of you guys think you know better than the people who designed the engine, and put more in?

To bring the level up to the full mark on dipstick, that's why. With 6.5 quarts it's not at full mark. We're only arguing over 1/2 quart here guys. Leave it out if you want to or put it in if you want too. I don't think our engines will care either way. I run mine with the dipstick reading full, it's just easier to tell how much oil it may or may not be using.

You know you are absolutely right. However I fill my filter too, before installing it and then fill with the remaining amount to 6.5 quarts. It is still a better thing to do. BTW, at 148,000 miles I still use no oil between changes.

From '02 service manual:
On page 0-39 (Vol 1 of 3) it shows a table entitled "Capacities -- Approximate Fluids" (note the word 'approximate').
The table shows "6.5 qts" for engine with filter change.
Then on page 6-171 (Vol 2 of 3) under "Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement", step 6) says:
"Fill the engine with the appropriate amount and type of oil. Refer to "Capacities -- Approximate Fluids" on page 0-39."
This is the table that says approximate capacity is 6.5 qts.
Then after filling the engine and running it for a few minutes to distribute it, and shutting the engine off and checking after it all drains back into the pan, the manual says per page 6-171, step 13:
"Top off the engine oil to the full mark on the oil level indicatior (dipstick), if necessary"
Some of you guys are running low on oil. It should be at the top mark.

On my car 6.5 quarts will not bring the oil level completely up to the full mark. 7 quarts will move it to the full mark. That is why I use 7 quarts.

On mine, I put in the 6.5 quarts, but the oil line is way above the full mark on the dip stick, in fact above the first part of the S-bend, above the full mark. When I changed it last week, at 5000 miles, it was still above the first S-bend. Yes, I pull the dipstick, wipe it down, re-insert and then check it. I am assuming as long as I stay above the full mark, I'm okay.
