I thought it was pretty funny and you're right. Some of the people on here are so used to paying "corvette prices" for everything, that they just automatically buy the most expensive part because, if it costs more, it must be better, right?

What did I miss? I re-read the entire thread and didn't see any "name calling". A few good natured jabs and some criticism about tires and prices. You want hostility go back and check out Cindy's threads and posts. No intervention for months until the bitter end. I was going to call the OP frugal but thought better of it.

I usually buy, maybe not the least expensive, but certainly one of the least expensive tires for all of my vehicles, and I've been very happy with them. They're usually 40K mile tires so they don't last as long as say an 80K tire, but I'd rather go through 2 sets of 40K tires than one set of 80k tires. The Vette is a bit different in that it's performance car, but I'd bet that at least some of the bargain brand tires for this car are actually pretty decent tires...

Ended up going with a set of firestone indy 500 tires for all 4. This video sold me on them http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ehawk+Indy+500

Around 450 installed locally

To the OP: if you are finding your summer performance (OEM fitting on C5's) have poor wet grip, then change tire make. The OEM Goodyears that came with the car fairly quickly (as in 15k or so miles) became distinctly "iffy" on wet roads - that's why I dumped them.

I've been through a few brands and have settled on Mich.Pilot A/S as (to me) the best compromise - more grip than it would be safe (or sane, whichever) to use on the street in the dry, very good wet weather grip (not a hint of aquaplaning even in utter downpours) and very usable in cold weather - it gets down to the 0-10 range here in winter - and mine is driven all year round, unless there is snow on the ground.

Op really needs to look into front suspension parts because there's no way it is properly maintained and goes through a set of tires in 5kmi.

I see a lot of that. Every time I go to Discount Tire to get a set of all seasons for my Corolla (I usually buy the less expensive tires for this car), the brand names are always different...never could figure why the brand keeps changing...

I realize that 160 miles a day will wear out tires rather quickly, but when you're running those 160 miles at 80+ MPH, as you say, do you really want the lowest priced tires on your car?

Lower price does not automatically equate to unsafe...

Keeping in mind, that tires live in a price competitive world, if a tire is cheaper, or "less expensive", if you want to be politically correct, it's less expensive for a reason.

Also keep in mind that part of the reason brand name tires are more expensive is that you're paying for the name and not necessarily a better product...
