Default to insulate...or not to insulate...the hood

the hood insulation on my 2000 vert is falling apart.
I am going to remove it during the next warm spell.

Question is....why did they put it there?

Is the function to protect the paint on the top of the hood??

Or to lower the engine bay noise??

Opinions welcome

I am OK with spending the money to replace it...I just need to know why.

There is a lot of heat produced in the engine bay. Almost all cars come with similar insulation. I live in the south where heat is an issue. In the event of a fire the insulation is designed to fall and help to retard the flames. I'm not sure about how it helps with noise but the cabin in mine is noisy enough.

Unless mine was an all out racer, I would rather have it than not.
I'm not sure how much a new one is but you may be able to refurbish yours with some spray contact adhesive.

When I installed an aftermarket hood on the '00 I owned, I could not use a hood liner on the car. I ran the car without one for probably close to six years and did not have any adverse effects on the hood or the paint.

I have had mine off for a couple of years, no issues here either and it looks a lot better without it in my opinion... I think it's mainly there to reduce noise

If you decide to remove the liner, you might run in into something I found when I changed mine out. The underside of the hood wasn't painted all that well. It actually showed more silver then purple. So I have it painted before I put the new liner on just in case I ever decide to leave it off. Look at yours before you decide to leave it off.

I bought the chrome inserts for underside of the hood. Had the paint shop paint and clear the underside. Hasn't affected the paint and it's many years.

As always....this forum is a great sounding board for discussion.

I am going to remove the hood blanket and if I do not notice a big increase in engine noise....probably leave it off.

I did notice that the paint around the edges of the blanket on the underside of the hood is rough and thin.

Thanks for the input!!!!

This is the liner's ultimate purpose; fire suppression. It's not an opinion; that's literally it's purpose. If a fire breaks out under the hood it's designed so the heat will melt the plastic plugs and the blanket will drop onto the engine putting out the fire. It does actually perform it's purpose as designed and there's no end of pictures of Corvettes caught in engine fires where suppression from the blanket occurs. Remember that your hood is made out of an SMC (sheet molded composite) fiberglass compound. While relatively lightweight for it's size and able to resist relatively high temperatures, SMC once reaching a heat ignition point will go up in flames pretty quick.

Ultimately though it will have no serious adverse effects with it off, such as paint, heat, or sound issues out of the norm, but with it off you will lose this fire suppression ability.

Mine was pretty ratty looking when I got the car 5 years ago. I removed it, it wasn't painted completely under it, mostly just primer. I ended up removing the hood, taping off the outer 1/2" and spraying it flat black to match the trunk. Love the way it turned out. I keep a can of fire extinguisher in the car too.

Carmotorsports.com

They sell both recover kits and completed ready-to-install insulators.

I bought a brand new hood liner from GM auto parts, through my local Chevy dealer. It took 3 days to get it free shipping and it was on sale for $125.00 I like the new look.
