Thread Starter, I say go have them paint your car. Post back your satisfaction with the job a few days after you get the car back and have had time to look at it in the daylight. Then past back your satisfaction 6 month later...... Will be a help for the next person wanting an inexpensive paint job!!!!
I have lots of contacts in the auto industry but didn't want to pull favors just yet. I was just annoyed at all the rock chips and other things and until my car is done the way I'd like it I thought a cheap paint job might get me by for the next 2 years I'm thinking it might take to get my car the way I like it. <--- One hell of a run on sentence

I had my old mustang painted by a maaco I was very happy with the results! But I also bought their top of the line package.
Here is a link to pictures of their work and results after

You are at the mercy of whoever happens to be spraying. Some people get good results from these places but the risk just isn't worth it to me as the horror stories far outnumber the positive ones.

Back in the late 80's when I was stationed down in Oklahoma I had a car painted by Macco. They did a great job for the money and it lasted as long as I owned the car.
But still, would I have my C5 painted by them, heck no.

There needs to be a balance.
Yes $10k paint jobs are very nice and much better than a $600 job.
A $20k car is much nicer than a $7k car.
I would never put a $10k paint on a $7k car or a $600 paint on a $20k car.
If the car is a beater, then a cheap paint might make it a little nicer for a while. If it is a beater, then instead of an expensive paint, use that money to put into a nicer car that doesn't need new paint.
If it is a nice car, then you may want to explore more expensive options.
The point is that you get what you pay for and need to balance what you put into the car with what it is worth to you vs other options.
Good luck with your choices.

Used to call them 50 footers. Looked good from 50' - any closer, not so much.
Maaco was better, and the more you paid, the better it got.
But that was a long time ago....
Even multi-million state of the art places can make mistakes.
Had to get my NBM redone 5 times at one "premiere" dealer body shop.
Mixed it wrong 2x, so the hood was purple, didn't treat the base right, so there were spots where the paint didnt stick, and once because there was lint embedded in the paint.
They got it right on try #5.

I didn't know those outfits are still around. Man, this takes me back. Back to the days of Cal Worthington and his dog Spot. Bill is right. We use to rag on guys when the paint was bad and call it an Earl Scheib paint job.

Painting is 80% prep. The other 20% is the quality of the paint and the guy behind the gun. If you can, and are willing to do the prep yourself, then a Maaco or similar might come out pretty well since the guy behind the gun does it everyday. Might even be better if you can supply the paint. (Of course disassembly, masking, etc also come into play.)
The next problem is finding a shop that will do a whole car. You're generally stuck with the Maaco's of the world or very high end. The typical body or collision shop doesn't want to be bothered, takes too long. Rather put on or beat out a panel, shoot, blend and out the door. In the OP's case shouldn't be that hard to find a shop and get decent results since it's basically a crash repair without the crash. It's a sand, scuff and shoot the affected panels and he's done.

I think the $6k for a classic car down to bare metal sounds too cheap.
I would not dream of a cheap paint job on a car I cared about and was going to get painted properly later. You can't just paint over a cheaply done job with a nice job later. Its not that simple you will be making a lot more work.
I would find a good detail guy and see what he can do for you.JMHO

I would say there isn't much these days that's gone up in price as much as a good paint job. I certainly understand the cost never goes down for anything, but I can't see why painting vehicles has become so expensive. It's gone beyond ridiculous...it's conceivable these days to spend more on a paint job than the vehicle is actually worth...I think a lot of it may be the fact that these places know people who are having hot rods and classics repainted have money, or they wouldn't have the toys in the first place, so it's just mark up to pad profits...

Just about everything concerning work done to my Vette, and I take the approach of how it came out of the factory. Either maintain the status quo or make an upgrade/improvement. Skimping or taking a risk with the Vette is never an option. That's why after owning it 13 years I can type this out here in my room with peace of mind, instead of being in the garage regretting/bitching about a cheap alternative.
A daily driver, beater, mere transportation....Ok, I can see a Maaco, Schieb paint job worthy of that....Not a Corvette....It deserves so much better. Just my .02

That's damn near 2 times what they are supposed to do 1 of those full repaint cheap jobs. I've seen some of those cheap jobs they do and honestly they don't look to bad at all especially for an everyday beater but about all they do is wipe it off a little with some reducer and the paint doesn't stick for very long. They call it {liquid sanding}
I'll never go back to them tough. My friend hit a small deer out here in front of my house a year ago with a 2008 Kia and they put a whole brand new door and front fender on it at one of the GM dealerships around here for less than $1300 billed to the insurance co.
They probably wouldn't have charged me more than $200 for the little damage I had. XXXX MACO

back when I was a teen. Earl Schieb was a term used for a crap paint job. Back then you could get your whole car painted for 19.95. And done in an hour. Earl Schieb was a name you used to bust the chops of a friend about his car.. "Hey buddy, where'd you get that paint job ? "... At Earl Schieb's !
Macco isn't any better
So many people here looking for the cheapest brakes, fuel for their car, oil, etc. No wonder why some 20 year old C5's can command 15,000 to 19000 on a one owner well documented car. Then there are other 20 year old C5's that can barely get 7,000.

I saw a skit on TV years ago, the guy said "HI, I'm Earl Sheib, I'll paint any car for $19.95" Then the woman steps in and said, "Hi, I'm Pearl Sheib and I'll do anything for $19.95"

Ha, Lots of opinions here, mostly very good ones. I would not even let my car in a parking lot near a ES. My dad owned a body shop, and unfortunately it would sometimes have a car repainted at ES because it was a lot cheaper. Back then, not sure anymore, they only had basic colors to select from, none which required a paint code from your car. After being trained to be a painter ( years), I actually worked one morning at an ES, and walked out, worse then you think! I am glad I know how to paint after seeing what it cost these days, gonna paint my sons Mustang next. Good luck on your decision.

It really all depends what you do with your car. If it's a daily driver then you might be satisfied with a cheap paint job to freshen it up, since the car isn't going to last forever. If you drive it only on nice days to shows and cruises, you would want a show quality paint job. Everyone is different. There is no right answer.
