Default Earl Schieb, Macco Anyone, Anyone??

Just wondering if anyone in here has gotten their car painted by the 2 national paint chains? Excuse my ignorance but if there no damage and we decide to keep our car the same color, shouldn't a paint job not cost an arm and a leg..

I noticed my 18 yr olds door handles are pretty beat up so and so are my rockers from the seat belt so I started walking around the car nd I wish I would have never done it.

I've recently had cars painted for my boss but the cars were classics down to bare metal and they were about 6K but I'm thinking I just want my black car repainted.

Come on guru's let me have it. Explain why a paint job can't be around 1K I don't need the moldings and everything removed.

You get what you pay for.
And a Corvette is worth more than a Macco paintjob.

I can only go by my experience with Earl Scheib when I was in High School in the late 1960's. My mother had her white Lincoln painted there and went the "Deluxe" route for about $100. They taped over the chrome (sort of) and the car came back looking like they painted it with a paint roller! I would say it was a damn good $100 job. I also had them paint a couple red racing GT stripes on my white 1968 Mustang which subsequently slid off at the car wash! I am sure these cheap alternatives have improved over the years, but I would never let them touch any Corvette personally.

It is a tough pill to swallow if you bought your C5 used for maybe the same price as a good paint job to begin with! It is also tough to accept that a vandal can do enough cosmetic damage to a C5 in a couple minutes which could cause your insurance company to "total" the vehicle since body prep and paint costs have skyrocketed!

The cost of materials alone to do a C5 today can easily exceed $1000. If you can find a painter that would agree to paint a C5 without taking it apart, that would pretty much tell you how much he cares about his craft.

I have seen prices quoted everywhere from $3,500 to $12,000 for a stock repaint. The quality will ultimately depend on the "painter" armed with the proper tools and materials. I would want to see other C5's he has painted for me to have any confidence and hope he does not have a hangover when he tackles mine!

I recently had the local Dealership quote me $1,000 just to have the front and rear bumpers repainted (black - same as original color) - and that was with me removing them from the car and dropping them off. They also repainted just my hood a few years ago for $600 and it worked out great.

If you were to get one of these paint jobs, you will probably see an "orange peel" finish in a few places. If I had an old car that was worth only a few thousand dollars with no potential of going up in value and wanted to spruce it up, maybe I'd go this route.

It's a special paint. The body is soft and if he paint is hard an thick you will have problems.

If the shop doesn't do a good job it will be a bitch to remove.

Someone in the past did a hack job on my front bumper fascia. I'm sure it looked okay at first but now it is cracking and chipping. The fascia will need replacing.

I always viewed the lost-cost advertised specialists as a way to put lipstick on a pig you were trying to sell - not something you would plan on keeping unless it were an off-road vehicle maybe?

Maaco is a franchise, you need to look at the individual Maaco shop's work, they are not all equal. Try to see some cars a shop has painted, that's the only real way to see the quality before you buy.

A good collision repair shop can probably fix what is scratched and polish the rest out for about the same price.

Life time guaranteed paint jobs are 10 000 to 12000. And good shops offer lifetime guarantees on their work. Meaning , the paint will match and adhere to the car for the life of the car. Not how well or how poorly you maintain it. It takes about a week to do a quality paint job. At earl sheib and macco. They do an hour of prep.. and shoot it... you can pick it up next day. They use the cheapest quality paint because their primary mission is to sell the cheapest paint job you can get... there is no guarsntees. They offer a 500 dollar paint job... do you really think it's going to remotely be a good job..
" YOU Really CAN NOT Afford To Buy ANYTHING TOO cheap."

This is a common sense issue, If you even have to "think " about this, you have much bigger issues , in your life .. common sense is a valuable tool in life.

If you don't have it, and can't find it, you are in for a bumpy road.

When I was 16 I had a car painted by an Earl Schieb shop in Kansas City - cost was less than $100. As has been said, scuff and paint with absolutely no concern for longevity or quality. Thankfully it was on a car that I was looking to trade anyway.

back when I was a teen. Earl Schieb was a term used for a crap paint job. Back then you could get your whole car painted for 19.95. And done in an hour. Earl Schieb was a name you used to bust the chops of a friend about his car.. "Hey buddy, where'd you get that paint job ? "... At Earl Schieb's !

Macco isn't any better
So many people here looking for the cheapest brakes, fuel for their car, oil, etc. No wonder why some 20 year old C5's can command 15,000 to 19000 on a one owner well documented car. Then there are other 20 year old C5's that can barely get 7,000.

Back home in the 60's the Earl Schieb saying went:

In by 9 out by 5 - $19.95, leave the windows down, interior free

The one constant in the thread is that there are a lot of Old people here.

In 1972 Earl painted my 1966 Olds 442. The base price was $29.99 but I spent ten bucks extra to get a metallic color. I did lots of prep myself. They used straight enamel back then, no acrylic. I wouldn't fade but was easily chipped. They baked it in an oven after they shot it. Never shot inside the doors, trunk or hood, only sprayed the outside. I was lucky, no runs or overspray. Sold they car a month later for a $600 profit. Had a Maaco job done a year later on a 1970 Cuda. That was a $69 job and was better quality. Considering that type of paint on a C5 is insane in my opinion.

True. A friend of mine owned a fine independent body shop that did top notch work. A few years ago he turned it into a Maaco franchise and opened several shops. The same people are still working for him and they still do good work.

There needs to be a balance.

Yes $10k paint jobs are very nice and much better than a $600 job.

A $20k car is much nicer than a $7k car.

I would never put a $10k paint on a $7k car or a $600 paint on a $20k car.

If the car is a beater, then a cheap paint might make it a little nicer for a while. If it is a beater, then instead of an expensive paint, use that money to put into a nicer car that doesn't need new paint.

If it is a nice car, then you may want to explore more expensive options.

The point is that you get what you pay for and need to balance what you put into the car with what it is worth to you vs other options.

Good luck with your choices.

I had a Vette back in the 80's. I took it to Macco. This was when I lived down in Orlando. Anywho, I did all the prep work for it. Repaired a front right fender, wet sanded the entire car. I took about two weeks to prep. Once I had verified my appointment and had also purchased the paint (this did cost me an extra 250 bucks), I arrived at their place early in the morning and tapped off the entire car, which wasn't a lot. Picked it up the next day, looked really good. The guy said they were excited to shoot a Vette. That was my only experience with a Macco.

I wouldn't put a $10K paint job on a $20K car either. I would sell it and get a $30K car.
