Default Can you change oil filter without draining the oil?

When you change the filter without changing the oil, will all the oil drain out the filter fitting or is it just the amount in the filter??

Some technical articles have recently indicated the weakness with the supersinthetics is the filter.

Yes, you can. I routinely take the oil filter out during header installs and I do get a little spillage because the filter is full but I only lose 1/4 qt. at most.

Patches, How often do you change your headers? Sounds like you get less miles on them than you do your oil. Interested in selling me some of your old ones cheap?

I guess I shoulda' been a little more clear on that. A buddy and I did mine and I have helped install a few others on friends' cars as well.

You can take the filter off without draining all the oil. That is the first step I take when changing both the filter and the oil. Only oil that comes out is what is in the filter.

I changed my filter after driving the first 500 miles when the car was new. I just lost the amount in the filter that was already posted.

You shouldn't change your headers until the DIC shows Header Life Remaining is below 10%. Otherwise you are just wasting $$$$.

As for the oil filter, you can remove it without draining out all the oil... or should I word it that it can be removed and all the oil won't come rushing out.

Let me clarify that... you can remove the filter and all the oil in the car won't come rushing out as long as you don't start the engine while the filter is off. (I hope no-one would do that, but ya never know :bb )

probably thinking about extended intervals for oil changes... but still change the filter more often.

Why? If you can afford a Vette, then why not do the cheap insurance by changing the oil every 3K? Thirty some bucks every 3K provides some peace of mind, and synthetic oil gets dirty just like regular oil, so that is also why I still change it every 3K.

Richin Chicago has the link to an ongoing experiment with the supersynthetic oils (Redline, Amsoil, Purple) and Mobil 1 as well. I'll try and find it and post it.

The findings in the experiment are indicating that the filter wears out before the oil does. You can get 10,000, 15,000, or more out of these oils, even Mobil 1. The filter needs changing much earlier. Speaking out of my a$$, without rereading the article, the filter lasts between 5k and 8k.

I'll try and get that link.
And for all those that like changing their oil every 3k just to be safe...well...go right ahead...it doesn't need to be.

More informatione on filters can be found here.

Oil Filter Study

I just changed my filter, from a UPF-44 to a Baldwin. Oil pressure is higher and no more ticking on start-up.
