Default Weight of stock wheels??????????

I have looked around, and have not found a reference to the weight of the stock rims. I am trying to compare 2000 five spokes to the 99 magnesium rims. Trying to source a pair for drag strip tires....... wondering if the difference is worth it, since this is unsprung weight.

This one is amazing, how many 1000's of magnesium wheels were bought, and no one knows the weight diference..........Lots of people joke about the wagon wheels being like boat anchors but no one know their actual weights???????

I'd love to finally have an answer to this question. This question has been posted lots of times over the years and no one seems to know. All I've heard though is that the Y2k wheels are one of the lightest wheels you can get. The mags weight are a bit lighter than the Y2ks. Most people don't realize that by going with aftermarket wheels, you are actually adding alot more unsprung weight to the vette which decreases acceleration, increases braking distances and changes the handling characteristics of your vette.

Edit: I finally found it:

Here are the weights of the Wagon wheels, Mags and Y2ks:

Wagon Wheels (97-99)
rear wheel - 21 pounds 10 ounces
front wheel - 19 pounds 6 ounces

Mag Wheels
rear wheel - 19.2 pounds
Front wheel - 17.4 pounds

Y2k Wheels (01-04)
Rear wheels 20 pounds
Front wheels 19 pounds

One more note on weight:

If you were to go with a non runflat tire, such as a Goodyear GS-D3 Non Runflat tire, you could save 24 pounds overall since each tire is 6 pounds lighter than an OEM Goodyear. The ride would also be much quieter and smoother too! I'm planning to get these once my runflats are toast

With my Titanium exhaust, Optima Red battery, Kooks LT headers and cats and a set of non runflats, I estimate I'd save about 76 lbs from stock. With my current mods, I've already saved about 52 lbs.

Excellent, although I would have to question the source of your numbers. I know of decent 14" rims that weigh 15lbs......the y2k rims are still cast Al and 20lbs for an 18" wheel seems extremely light. If this is the case it bodes well for staying away from the Mg wheels. I will measure mine as soon as I get the opportunity.

Until you've handled those Y2K rims (factory) you just can believe how light they are. I was amazed the other day...

I got the info from some archive threads from a while ago (was a real pain finding the info too since the search feature doesn't work too well) where a forum member weighed them on a large equipment scale. Another forum member verified the weights as well. I already knew the approximate weight of the Y2k wheels but wanted to find the exact numbers. One of the reasons why I've hesitated in trading in my stock Y2ks is because I've yet to find a better wheel. All the wheels built for the C5 have been put through strict tolerance testing while at the same time, made as light as possible.

The y2k wheels are not cast they are forged. That makes them very strong and allows less material to make them lighter.

Just to throw this out there since were talking weight. I just got my new wheels and tires a couple weeks ago and when I went from O.E. Concepts chrome y2k wheels to O.E. Concepts chrome C5/C6 I could feel the car was slower. Unsprung weight makes a huge difference on acceleration, 10lbs of unsprung equals about 100lbs of body weight in the drag race world. My aftermarket y2k wheels had worn out GY RF's on them. One of my new rear wheels with a brand new 18" Nitto ZR tire weighs 58 lbs!

Don't want to hijack your thread but since we're on the subject does anyone know what a C5 OE Polished Aluminum wheel with an OE GY EMT weighs. I am looking to buy some and have them shipped to me and need the weight to get an idea what the shipping will be. Thanks
