c5 vs porsche 928
I know this sounds crazy, but wondering if anyone ever owned a 928 for an extended period of time, and now has a c5. I owned a 928s for about 10 years and thought it was a great car, got rid of it, and am looking for a new toy (a C5). I looked at a newer 911 and the blender sounding motor just doesnt do it for me, always loved the sound of a V-8 (I actually currently own a 68 vert, and yes the 928 was an aluminum v-8). So, any impressions comparisons?

Safety Car
I've driven my brother's early 928 and it's slow. I guess it's not bad for a 25 year old car but it's not very reliable and he was always putting money into it until last year when he parked it in the garage and it hasn't moved since. The newer S4 is a nice ride with over 300hp I think.

in particular
wanted to get impression of how solid the car feels. My impression of the 928 was that it was pretty solid (no squeaks, rattles, good sound damping etc), wanted to know how the C5 feels in comparison (haven't driven one yet, but dont think that performance would be the problem!).

I recently sold my Boxster and got a C5. Buzz, squeek, and rattle is actually better than the Porsche. Frankly, Porsche didn't impress me in this department.
Powerwise, the Vette stomps on the 986.
The shifters are about equal in both cars.
Cornering grip and stopping power would have to go to the Vette. I attribute this to the bigger tires more so than the design of the car.
Steering, clutch, and braking feel and precision are better on the Porsche, as one would expect.
As an everyday car, a C5 coupe wins hands down. It's roomier, more comfortable, has more cargo space, cheaper to maintain, and a MUCH better stereo.
All told, I'm happier with the Vette. But if I could have more than one sports car, I'd get myself a 911 too. They are very different cars and each one does some things better than the other. Oh, throw in a Cayenne too for when I need a "truck"

I found a guy that makes swap kits to put SBC's in 928's. I almost did that. I think an LS1 in a 928 would be cool. Love my Corvette anyways and it likely would not compare.

I had a 68 vert 427 back in the mid 70's. The 04 Z06 is on another planet when comparing the two. A friend has an 02 C4 911, the Z smokes it handling or in a straight line. Don't know much about 928s other than they are hard on parts. Get what you'll enjoy to drive and and can afford.
My choice is obvious, vette all the way, the bark from the LS6 is something else.

But since it was a lifelong dream to own one, I cut a check for what I thought it was worth and went to finalize the deal. The owner of it wouldn't budge on the price... not one penny. I showed him my bank check (for $2k less than the asking price) and he just laughed at me. I laughed back as I put the check away and left; never to return.
that very next weekend I took my first test drive in a C5. WOW, it was day/night heads-above the 928... in every aspect. About 2 weeks later I had a brand new C5 ordered.
It's kinda funny that I had a boner for the 928, that started the very first year is was available. And then when it finally came time to buy one... the test drive was dissapointing. I didn't know at that time, but the V8 in the 928 was actually two Porsche 4 cyl blocks - specialy re-machined - and bolted together. I wasn't too pleased when I found that out either.
Do you know if the block design was ever updated before the end of the 928 production ?
