They all work, some better than others. I have both the passport 8500 and the valentine 1, they both are good and i would even say on the top of their game.
However, do not be too careless or be too confident with them. There are newer traffic enforcement technologies that can and will defeat them.

The best detector is your own awareness. Never forget that.
I have the Escort 8500 X50 and it is a helpful tool, but it will never replace my eyes and instincts.

guys, i hope this helps out a little.
imagine this scenario.
im sitting on the side of the road on the other side of a hill or around a curve (you can see me 500ft away as you exit the curve/top the hill, the law says i must be visible 500ft away.). my radar is on, but i dont have the antenna (the thing that sends the signal out) on. i see you the second you exit the curve/top the hill and i turn on the antenna and get your speed. now by the time your radar detector goes off and you react, i already have you. unless the officer is sitting there with the antenna transmitting, you wont pick him up untill its too late. also, if he's "monitoring" the traffic ahead of you, then you will pick him up before you get there though.

My main interest is for the small town speed traps. Lots of small town around here that cannot afford the instant on radar, so they run with the always on type. And they are the ones that want to enhance the city coffers. I pick them up one to two miles ahead.
But as you pointed out, if someone is out on the road alone thay are dead meat to an instant on radar.

Yeah well I got a Ticket On the interstate I was sandwiched in between two granny cars going the same speed. BUT who does he deside to get..........ME!! tried to explain that I was only going with the flow of traffic, to which he told me that "the flow of traffic is NOT the speed limit, 65 is!

I have the 8500 x50. I feel naked without it. I like to know where Law enforcement is, and I try not to speed.

I have a V1 and I love it. Radar detectors don't make you invisible, but they MIGHT give you an early warning under the right conditions. It won't do a thing for you if the LEO slides up behind you and paces you.
I try to watch my speed particularly at night, because you never know who's behind you.
I've never been stopped in the Vette - but recently got a ticket for 63 in a 45 in the Blazer. The LEO got me with laser, and wrote me for 10 over. He was a real gentleman, just doing his job!
