Default When using aftermarket ECU, is the PCM still needed?

I am not familiar with the LS1 PCM, specifically what all it does on the Y body. I am wanting to use BS3 for forced induction purposes, among others, but I am thinking that the OE PCM does a lot more than the BS3 will.

Other than engine control, what does the OE PCM control?

Thank you all,

Asman
