1998 computer question
Thinking of picking up a 1998 coupe but have a question about the computer. Going to tune this myself, probably often at the dragstrip.
Is this a "fast" computer? Will I be able to make changes quickly, unlike
the computer on the 1998 Camaro (LS1), which is apparently very slow.
Thanx..

The 97-98 PCM is "slow" compared to the 99+ PCMs, however, I don't know what that really means in terms of performance and I bet most people who say that are just parroting what they've heard without knowing the significance of the statement.
Time to flash, however, I don't think would be much faster on the 99+ PCMs. I flash my '98's PCM frequently and it only takes around 30 seconds to flash the config.
BTW, I haven't had trouble tuning my heads, cam, intake, exhaust, supercharger, etc. mods on my '98. However, I don't have anything to compare it to. Perhaps someone that really knows what they are talking about can chime in.

I had a 98 C5 with apprx 400 RWHP-----The stock ECM is fine for a N/A engine---Good for apprx 500 crank HP-----The issue with the early LS1 ECM's is that the MAF table was limited--and the newer ones go much higher----The only time I would update one is if you exceed 500 crank HP----I have tuned 97 C5's with boost and they all tuned fine below 7 PSI of boost--which is about the max of the airflow table of the MAF----as far as drivability the 97-2000 ECMs have plenty enough tables to tune out any issues by modding with cams heads--LT headers or under 7 PSI boost
