Default Upgrade MAF for tuning on a '97??

I'm putting together a TT build on my '97. I understand I'm tune limited via my PCM, but am I also limited by my stock MAF if I want to go with a MAF tune? I am confident I can re-pin to a 99+ PCM so let's say for the sake of arguement that I complete that successfully.....will a MAF upgrade help?

And if so, what should I upgrade to? I'm running an LS2 TB with LS6 intake 90mm snout upgrade.

Thanks.

Get the Hitachi "slot" sensor used in the LS3/7/9. You will need to buy a saddle, have it welded into a pipe, and then swap the harness leads for the MAF connector as well. Using a 3.5" pipe with that sensor, you should have enough measurement range for about 1000hp worth of airflow. You will need to scale the tune to make it work, but it's very doable, even without going to a custom operating system in the ECU. If you use the IAT that's built into the Hitachi element, you will also need to revise the IAT scaling in the tune. Otherwise, you can split the IAT wire from the MAF and just use the existing LS1 IAT sensor from a C5/4thGen F-car.

They make a plug and play kit. I bought one just by the ls7 maf and buy the intake tube for it. No need to weld anything and it looks factory. I have a thread on it if you search under my name. I'm on my phone or u woukd post a pic of the tube but it was 25 shipped off ebay the sensor was 45 I think..then you can get the Casper harness for 25. It's all plug and play you will need to re pin 2 wires but that's easy..

Even the later gen 3 PCMs are limited on the MAF table. The max value that you can stick in there is 67.7lb/hr (which is then converted to g/cyl by the PCM for calculations) and the table caps at 12kHz. To TurboLX's point if you go over this (which you will if you're running more than a little boost), you'll have to scale the tune or ditch the MAF and go SD.

The stock 97 -98 MAF tune has a max limit of 11250 HZ---this is the older 3.5" MAF The newer MAF's are now 4" and in the stock tune the MAF table goes up to 12000 HZ
The stock 97 98 MAF set up is good up to approx. 500 crank HP the newer MAF's are capable of somewhat more crank HP like 600
There is no advantage to going to the larger MAF and newer ECM unless you expect over 500 crank HP---Normally this would require a boosted engine-- If you expect over 500 crank HP yes your 97-98 MAF set up will exceed the stock table and you would need to update to the larger 4" MAF and a newer ECM that has the larger 12000 HZ table
I have tuned boosted 97's with 7 lbs of boost and the stock MAF reading was still under 11250 HZ--- When changing to a newer ECM and/or the newer larger 4" MAF you should have your own software required to re-scale your MAF table---Re-scaling takes hours and hours of data logging to get it correct--basically if you aren't running past the stock max MAF table there is no advantage for an upgrade to a newer ECM and larger MAF My 98 C5 had approx. 475 crank HP and I still was able to use the stock 3.5 " MAF and the 98 ECM I was close to the max at 10500 HZ but not over---The complexity of installing a newer ECM and recalling the larger MAF is un necessary and there is no HP advantage of that change as I mentioned unless you exceed the 11250 HZ level--- Having someone data log your car will tell you where you're at
