I'm considering purchasing a scan tool and while searching information I came across software programs that supposedly you can load into a lap top and scan you car. Has anyone tried them and Are these any good.

Depending on features they offer, they can be good to excellent. The standard scan tool searches for OBD II (SAE) codes, the better ones included GM enhanced codes, better still are the bi-directional ones which can help change the VSS when you put different tires on, ABS bleeding, etc. The more modules you add to the high end systems the more expensive it is. For many of your needs HPTuners or EFILive tuning systems will be more than what you need...scan and tune. You can google the different systems available for user comments.
