Default What is Tuning?

OK Guys go ahead and laugh, I know you want to but if you don't ask you don't learn, right?
I've been looking at Headers (there are what looks like hundreds of them and about as many prices) alot of them say it's a good idea to tune the engine after installation.
I guess the question is, what do you tune?
I understand that installing headers change the exhaust pressures or something like that,
Can anyone explain what and why this is done?
I know it's a noob question but at the risk of feeling stupid I still want to know.

LT headers open up a whole new can of worms on a stock C5---LT's move the front 02 bungs as far as 3' further back than the stock locations--This makes the front 02's give erroneous data as to the fueling during P/T operation that can be transferred to WOT as well---This is why LT's are illegal in many states as without tuning the engine will normally run very rich and the HC's will go way up and it won't pass smog---Even if you are in a no smog state the new 02 locations must be tuned in to allow your front 02's to read more accurately----
Finally beyond P/T and at WOT when adding LT's the WOT air fuel ratio will need an adjustment to make the most HP----Often without tuning when adding LT's the car will actually make LESS HP until they are tuned----And then there is the timing----These engines have knock sensors that record any pinging or detonation----With LT's because the exhaust tubes are so much thinner than the stock cast iron manifolds----The sensors will falsely read new noises from the thinner tubes that the ECM will interpret as knock or pinging--This is called "false knock" Tuning can eliminate this false knock and removal of timing---
