Default 3600 Stall TC with 3.15 gears

There has been some discussion previously on this board as to how a high stall TC would work with 3.15 gears. I would like to present the results of my setup. My car was a 99 with the standard boltons: Kooks headers with x-pipe, Vararam, LS6 intake and dyno tuning. In that configuration my best 1/4 mile ET was 12.63 @110.47 with a 1.95 60 foot time. Recently I added a 3600 stall Vigilante TC and a custom ground cam by the Vette Doctors. Around town the car drives great. Yesterday was my first trip to the track. I ran a new best of 11.85 @ 114.16 with a 1.68 60 foot. In another run I had a 1.65 60 foot. The car launches great and pulls really hard. Weather conditions at the track were similar for both the old setup and the current setup. So what I am trying to say is that a high stall TC can work well with the 3.15 gears. Thanks to Carmen, Dennis and Joey at the Vette Doctors for giving me a great running ride.

Nice. Getting 60's like that have you considered the DTE or some other brace? I'd be deathly afraid of busting something with 60's like that.

Not with a A4. I've had plenty of 1.5's and 1.6's, in my case, the only thing that goes are the clutches in the diff.

As for a high stall and 3.15's, I agree they do work fine. It'll just feel a little loose. I had a SY3500 and 3.15's, I swapped out the 3.15's for 3.73's and saw hardly any gain at the track. The car just felt more responsive.

WOW, that's an astounding improvement! What tires are you running at the track?

Many people still feel that a performance converter MUST be matched with hi ratio gears, like 3.73's or greater. You'll see it all the time on this forum -- comments like "don't waste your time with a converter and stock 3.15 gears" or "since you are already have the rear out, you might as well put in gears too...". Dave is just providing some data that indicates the contrary.

It's true that swapping gears is not as important when you have a really good T/C like the SS3600. However gears make a big difference in driveability. A 3600 stall with 3.73 gears is going to feel alot tighter than if you have 2.73 or 3.15 gears. While gears are not as important with a good T/C 3.73s are still worth .10-.20 and about 2-3 MPH in the 1/4 mile over 3.15 gears even with a good T/C not to mention better performance from a roll.

For this reason alone, I recommend gears. My YPT4400/4.10 combo feels tigher than my SY3500/3.15 did.

A YPT4400 & 4.10s are an awesome setup. Good luck on your quest for the 10s Mike.

Dave, thanks for the post, impressive results.
I have a 98 rag top with almost anidentical bolt-ons and same tranny/gears.

Are you still running the stock heads with the new cam and converter?
Also, I`m just curious what type of tires you run at the track, I`ve been thinking of trying a set up similar to yours and was curious if the tires are part of your impressive formula.

Cheers, Rick

WOW; I must have missed a few posts then.

for those that are at the track a lot, a high stall TC can work miracles.

I can answer that.

He is running stock heads but with the appropriate spring package. And yes he is running 18" BFG drag radials (295/35/18)
