Default Bizarre "exotic" Corvette noises.

A few weeks ago there was an exotic Corvette noise thread. I may have what some have been looking for. I have tested 12 different sets of headers on my stock long block '03 Z06. I had the opportunity to test a set of 180 degree headers , custom built by ATI in Wixom , Michigan. Car sounded like very angry large displacement V6. Anyway, made a video clip for forum members enjoyment.

www.atimotorsports.com/public/video/blue car.avi

Car made great HP, among the best , but needed to run the car in open loop to prevent fuel trimming (which would be really confusing to the cars computer). There are some fitment issues on these cars with 180 degree headers , but it can and has been done obviously. ATI may consider building these if there is interest albeit more expensive obviously than other commonly available header combo's. These headers were custom built for the ATI in-house hot-rod.

Sound clip is with 180 degree headers, no X-pipe, and a set of Borla Stingers, enjoy.............................

Sorry server seems slow, allow to fully load before viewing, sound clip is choppy.

Default Link to header info.

In trying to research more about "180 degree headers" I came across the following site: http://www.ssheaders.com/header.htm
I thought it was VERY interesting.

ATI will probably chime in here soon, but yes if they produce them they will probably be made of stainless. They havent said they would make them, they are just toying with the idea. Inconel is crazy money,but..............if you want to remove as much wieght from the car as possible..............................de fineatly not in my budget either.

Oh chite! Is that a widebody or are the fat tires creating an illusion?

I plan on coming up this weekend (parts are in), and if my car comes back sounding like that I won't complain...j/k

Ah yes 180 headers. We use them on our panteras.

http://www.pim.net/bgDscn0620.jpg (not mine)
we always called them "bundle of snakes"

They work on mid-engined cars very well as we have the space.

(same engine different car, gt40)

I'm suprised somebody made them for a vette. I looked and just can't find enough space to route all the tubes and still keep them at 32".

They definetly change the sound of the exhaust.

ATI Performance Engineering fabricated these prototype headers a year ago as an experiment. Designing the 180 degree crossover was a total pain in the rear, but we figured it out.

We currently plan to make another set to improve installation and fitment from the first set, and if there was interest, we would consider having them mass produced (in SS). Not sure of cost at this time, maybe guess at 50% higher than standard headers.

Inconel is only for those who do not need to ask about price.....

The theory of 180 degree headers is that you get the best of both long tube and short tube designs. Good midrange power under the curve like long tubes, without sacrificing top end power of short tubes. You also do not need an X-pipe, and can run smaller exhaust tubing.

If you think Danny's car sounded bizarre, you should hear them on our race car........ best description I heard from someone is that it sounded like an angry "pack" of Formula cars going by..... definitely as close as it gets to that European exotic car sound....
