Need Help Troubleshooting Code C1291
Just this week I've been getting the infamous "Service Traction System" message and indicator lamp. Each time I get the warning, I pull the code(s) when I reach my destination.
Each time I have only gotten the following TCS codes
C1291 - Open Contacts on Brake Lamp Switch during deceleration
C1293 - C1291/1292 set during previous ignition cycle.
My brake lights work and I think the brake lamp switch works OK because it kicks off my cruise control.
I've tried several serches on the forums, but I haven't found anyone who has posted about fixing this code before.
From what I have read, a lot of intermittent electrical problems are the result of poor/dirty grounds. Might this be the case here?
Any help is appreciated!

rgregory,
I didn't get an answer from the forum, but I did finally buy a factory service manual (the 3 volume set). I would higly recommend it to anyone who does most of their own repairs. Much more detail on troubleshooting problems than the standard manual you can get most places.
I finally traced my problem down to a bad brake light switch. (the brake lights worked when I hit my hazards or turn signals, but not when I pressed the brake pedal) It was kind of scary to realize that I had been driving for a couple days without brake lights
In my manual, I don't have a code 1292 listed... it skips from 1291 to 1293....although the description of 1293 says 1291 or 1292 set during previous ignition cycle....did you mean 1291...
If you do have 1291, let me know and I'll see about scanning in the troubleshooting procedure.
