Default oil leak around the oil filter somewhere

is there some kind of sensor there....I changed the oil and the filter was tight but there was oil on the exhaust right next to the filter

The oil temp sensor is right above the filter. It is housed in a fitting called the oil pan cover and there is an elliptical shaped gasket between the fitting and the oil pan housing. If you use an extendable mirror and flashlite from above, you should be able to see if it or the oil pan itself is leaking in that area.

Anyone know if I can change the sensor gasket without draining the oil?

Are you sure it just wasn't residual from the oil change or possibly a bad oil filter gasket?

I was hoping it was a bad filter gasket. But the gasket on the old filter looked good. I put the new filter on and went for a drive and still caught a faint whiff of oil on the exhaust pipe. Now I'm hoping it's the sensor gasket instead of the oil pan gasket.

Yes you can change it with draining the oil, some oil will drain down from the block so look out for that.
