Default Do you keep your gas tank full?

Someone told me that it is very important to keep your tank full of gas as often as possible. He was telling me that when you hit 1/2 a tank, fill it up. The reason is the condensation that forms in the tank. Obviously it is not good to get water in your gas.

I figured that GM had done something to deal with the problems since I had not been told to keep it full as much as possible.

What do you guys think? Thanks.

Never heard that.... mine is usually always less than a 1/2 tank, b/c I don't drive it much, and its lighter with less.

I don't know about the keep it full theory, but I did find something interesting a couple of days ago. As everyone must have experienced at one time or another, the DIC will say "Reverve Fuel" or something like that when the gas level gets pretty low. But, if you keep driving without filling up, the DIC will next say "Low Fuel" and a light on the instrument panel will say "Check Gages". I don't know if the next warning is the engine stopping (no gas) or what, but I did not want to push it any further :D

The "full tank" idea is a good one! Especially in humid and/or cold areas of the country. When I lived in Michigan this was very important; here in AZ it is not as much of a concern. Now I keep it topped off because it is often a LONG way between gas stations in the west!!

We all have way too much time on our hands if we are worrying about the amount of gas in our gas tanks........just keep it from going to empty and you'll be just fine :D

If I remember correctly, Gasoline is not as hydroscopic as some other fuels, so filling the tank isn't as big an issue as it doesn't pull moisture out of the air as aggressively as say.. alcohol or methanol.

The concern is valid, an empty tank is filled with air, and if it is humid air as is quite often the case here by the Great Lakes, at night the moisture will condense on the walls of the tank and then run down into the fuel. A full tank has little room for moist air, therefore you will get less moisture in your tank.

I keep mine around 1/8th full all the time. Less weight give faster times at the drag strip:D

I keep seeing recommendations for 1/4 tank while drag racing, but if you are running on street tires wouldn't the extra weight be more beneficial as a traction aid than harmful due to extra weight?

I might help you be more consistent, but I do not think it will make you quicker.

Past experience has shown me that it cost just as much $ to keep the top half full as it does to keep the bottom half.
I've had to replace rusted out gas tank and plugged fuel filters on my vehicles in the past. So just out of habit if it reads 1/2 a tank full I go and fill it up. Then I drive around lika a mad man trying to use up 3/4 of the tank if I know I am going to Race.  .

As kind of a side note I was wondering if anyone knows if the C5 gas tank is metal or a plastic composite?

I heard if add more than 1/3 of gas to your tank that it resets your computer settings, not sure if it is a re-learn or what. Got this from Pro-Performance out of Fla. When I go to the drags I time it so that my car is almost empty and just before I pull in I add 1/3 of gas to tank.

Never head of this one. I wouldn't worry about it. I run with all different levels of fuel.

I ussually fill it up after it gets down to 1/2 a tank. I've heard that once it gets below 1/4 of a tank, you risk having "gunk" and stuff begins to go into your engine.
