What would be the best cam selection with the stock heads?

Here is a good link to read. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=327734
I was looking a 5.3 heads, and a TR224 cam. I still need to do some more research. I was wondering if I could drop in a 224 with stock heads while I save up for heads and headers myself. From what I read, the TR224 is very popular for street manners, and nice flat power band. Headers before cams, is a popular statement, I don't know myself. The cam question seems to lead to headers, heads, underdrive pully, oil pumps, rods, tuning. It really adds up. $4000 budget? Funny how it starts with a $400 cam.

This was suggested to me, and I didnt follow it. I still think it's correct advice:

Do your homework and select the cam that's right for you, Then go one size bigger.

Go with the TR 224, or the TSP 224 or 228.

In fact, the TSP 224 is available on 116lsa, and has lift numbers in the 580s. So that cam would be extremely streetable with the wide lsa, make just about as good power as the tr224, and later on down the road when you add high-flow heads the nice high lift numbers just under .600 will better take advatage of ported heads. (The tr224 has lift in the .550s or .560s I believe.

Will,
I really don't know, but is the .550 number verses the .600 the lift on the springs? Maybe I'm wrong, but I was assuming that the .550 lift was better for the spring life. I guess it is all about trade offs, but I was willing to give up a few horsepower, to get long spring life, low end torque, factory idle in an A4. Anyhow, I am enjoying my first real look at cam/head selection. Thanks.

Basically yes. It is the lift of the cam lobe which affects springs and two things shorten spring life. Lift and ramp.

Depends on your driving style, what you want from your car, and what are your ultimate performance goals.
